Or do the cheap players not look as good? My TV is a 32-inch LCD with HDMI input.

TV resolution is 720p/1080i. I'm thinking the current player is converting to analog to send out through the three video cables and the LCD TV is converting it back to digital. Seems like potential for deterioration.

It should be better, since it avoids turning video into analog and back again. However, the chipset in the player will make a difference, so some players will be better than others, not to mention some $30 players will be more reliable than others.

If you have a specific model in mind, google for reviews of it.

Personally i dont think an Upconversion DVD player is worth using HDMI cables for. you might get a slight picture improvement, but I can't imagine it would be much better. If you really want a better picture, get a Blu ray or HDDVD to hook to your HDMI cables.

BTW, what resolution is your TV?
