Yesterday I bought a box containing 20 magnificent " Kensington Pride" Queensland Mangoes for Aus$17.00 at the supermarket. I figure all my Christmas' have come at once.

I know watermelon is in season in a week or so.. and soon it will be Aus $0.50 kg

And I have fresh stone fruit - cherries, peaches, nectarines, delicious apricots.. and grapes... all in season and oversupplied in abundance in the shops. I love this time of year!

What sort of food are you blessed with over Christmas?

We have some traditional Christmas food in my Island like "arroz con gandulez", pork (lechon azado) in many ways, "pasteles"and a special drink called coquito(made with Puerto Rican Run and coconut milk).

The season for mangoes is March thru May.

Wow, all those fruits are out of season here this time of year. I am envious. We miss our fresh mangoes! For us in New England, the smell of Christmas is fresh pine bows, mulled cidar and as someone above said, candy canes.

Yeah lucky you, here what is in season is whatever is in your root cellar, or flown from halfway around the world, which is rarely anygood by the time it makes it here anyway.

As a chef living in a warm climate that has new things in season pretty much year round would be preferable to what is really available here now.

That is fascinating! Mangoes?!

For me, it would be dates, pomegranates, chocolate, peppermint, pumpkin pie, and cranberries.

We used to make clove-studded oranges to fill the house with wonderful fragrance.

I'll be making a roasted duck dinner for Christmas eve.

We have an old family recipie for this goop that you put on crackers - it looks unappealing but it tastes sooooo good. Green and Black olives, cocktail onions, artichoke hearts, Giardini, tuna, tomato sauce, vinager. Mix together and chill. That and cookies. Have a Mango for me Gaz!

It is a nice time of year for fruit here...

Edit: Thanks! My local Frankies doesn't sell fruit but I know one that does...my taste buds are watering!!

Ah, that's some memories for me, mate! We always used to have melon with salt and pepper on Christmas Day, and in the evening we would make homemade ice cream! Long time past, all those memories.
