There are many medications for this. Unfortunately many aren't always covered by health insurance. You should consider before you try a medication whether some drug you are currently on may be causing this or if this is caused by a mental illness. Exercise may be able to help you. Exercise a few hours (maybe 3-4) before you want to sleep for 30-60 minutes and really sweat and then do something relaxing or homework if you have any.

I also suggest that you see a doctor and get some recommendations. There are many reasons for not being able to sleep. Until you go to the doctor follow these guidelines:

eat by 5 or 6 p.m. If you eat later, eat very light, like salads and no red meat or food cooked in oils or butter. No gravies.

Do not drink any alcohol, soda (most are caffeinated), coffee or tea (except herbal teas, which do not have caffeine). Do not drink ANYTHING after 6:30 or 7 p.m.

Go to sleep at basically the same time, preferably between 9 and 10.

Lie down on your back and breathe deeply and slowly for five to ten breaths. Then just breath slowly and lie and relax. Try not to think of anything, especially something that will make you anxious. If you do not normally sleep on your back, after a while you can sleep as you usually do if you want.

Also reading a book of fiction that is not too serious at first may also help you to sleep. Quiet music may also help.

Try these things. They might work. Try to relax.

I had the same thing happen.. and it still does some times. Try not eating a few hours before you go to bed (actually not supposed to eat after midnight) also dont watch tv or play on the computer before bed.
What I usually do is take a hot bubble bath and then get into bed and read, and that usually does the trick :)
OR you can use sleeping pills.. my experience is that I usually over sleep or feel groggy the next day.

No-one teaches us to sleep properly when we are young and thats the problem.

Sleeping is all to do with the brain, and sometimes people brains need retraining to go into "deep sleep" so you feel like you haven't been awake all night.

There is a free seven part guide to sleep and sleep help without drugs on the website below and they also sell a guide on it. No hypnosis, no drugs or herbs, it really quite amazing and it works.

Have a look at http://www.insomniafreedom.com/free.html and see if it helps
