Are you to give charity through your mosque or other Muslim charities, or do you discharge the obligation of charity any time you help a person, such as giving food to a homeless person? I guess I'm wondering if there is a specific structure to your charity. Thank you.

Salaam Alaykum,
Zakat is 2.5 percent of money, jewelry, and in the old days and still in some villages cattle and land all added together. Many Muslim's are exempt if they indeed are not rich. I believe and I might be wrong but minimum to have to pay it is
a minimum of ten thousand dollars and up..forgive me if that figure is incorrect. The non zakat or non monetary charity is not handing a homeless person a dollar to buy alcohol but a smile a helping hand to friends and neighbors is part of the unending charity in Islam that one must try to do at every opportunity.Charity in the form of giving money to someone for alcohol, drugs, and gambling or otherwise is considered wrong in Islam. Zakat is collected by Imams in poor villages and you may consult with your local Imam here in the States who is in charge of collecting it.
Wasalaam

Yes, all that u mentioned are the ways we can give charity. There is no specific structure to it except for the part where u annually have to give 2.5%of all your wealth in charity..(thats the minimum and mandatory). Other thn that, Allah says to give regular charity

Hi. It is an obligation on Muslims to pay 2.5% of their wealth to specified categories in society when their annual wealth exceeds a minimum level. You can give it through a Muslim charity organization, or also as food or clothing (If you don't have much money, or none at all - doesn't matter I think.). Even a smile can be charity.

it is one of the five pillars. It is basically saying that if you have more than enough of something and there is someone else who has none or not enough then you should help them. You can help in any way food, money, shelter. Its just to help your fellow man that is doing worse than you are.
