There are two main groupings in health care occupations. Professional occupations and service occupations. Professional occupations are those that generally require a bachelors degree or higher and a license to practice, and the service occupations are those taught in technical and community colleges.

The Service occupations are expected to have over a 33% increase in positions between now and 2014. The highest increases are in the following service occupations:
Home Health Aides ^ 66%
Personal and Home Care ^ 60%
CNAs ^ 22%
Physical Therapy Asst ^ 41%
Dental Asst ^ 43%
Medical Asst ^ 53%
Med Transcription ^ 22%

The Professional Occupations with the greatest shortages will be:
Social Workers and Counselors
Chiropractors
Physician Asst
Dental Hygienist
RNs to include Advanced Practice Nurses
Physicians & Surgeons

I don't have the exact numbers for the professional occupations available to me, but you will be suprised to know, that the other professions listed have higher increases in numbers projected than nurses IAW BLS.

If you like working behind the scenes but still like helping people, histotechnican is a in demand field. They prepare
biopsy specimens for microscopic review by the pathologist.
You do not interact with the patient but you help the pathologist to make a diagnosis that is used to help the patient. There is a great shortage of histotechs.

NURSES (LPN/LVN & RN/BSN/MSN) and AIDES (CNA/CP1/PCT)!!!! Of these I would say the RN shortage is the greatest. I know there is also a demand for radiology techs, Ultrasound techs and phelbotomists. Good Luck!
