Start with a 22 LR on small game. There are plenty out there, with any type action you like, and in any price range. Next, depending on what game is available and appealing to you, you can move to either a centerfire miniature for long-range varminting (something like 22-250 or 223 Remington with one of the Remington 700 varmint rigs comes to mind), or you can move to a small-bore in the 6.5-7mm non-magnum cartridges for medium game. Despite the slightly larger bore, these rifles tend to be lighter and perhaps have a shorter barrel for handiness in carrying and pointing.

Boker is right! I bought a Remington 700 in a .243 16 years ago as my first deer rifle. It's light, packs around easy, has soft recoil, shoots flat and fast, is inherently accurate, and does a good job harvesting deer. The cartridge case is very close to a .308 necked down to 6mm/.243 diameter, and there are a lot of different bullet weights and styles to choose from, especially if you reload.

A 30-06 by Savage or Remington, new or used.* You have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from.* When you own a 30-06 you don't need any other rifle to harvest game in North America.*

If it is for deer hunting go with a Savage with the accu trigger, get a 308 or 30-06..... I got mine with the scope, the whole package all for under $400 new at walmart and it shoots really fine.

Remington 700 chambered in .243.
Perfect 1st serious game rifle, the 243 is a very versatile caliber, offering light and heavier bullet weights for anything from varmint and small game, to whitetail deer.
Nominal recoil, excellent ballistics and energy deliver.

Depends on the game you plan to hunt.An all around rifle is any in a 30.06 caliber, many start with a simple 30p30 thats cheap and very inexpensive.I'd recommend a good bolt acton or lever action in either caliber,as most have the knock down power for your average big game....George

Agree with Boker, there is no other choice for 1st deer caliber however, I would like to remind everyone that remington make a model 7400 in .243 aswell. Either way, the .243 is the right caliber.
Good Luck & Happy Shooting !

Look at a Savage. They are very good quality, and typically aren't very expensive. As far as what caliber you'd like, that would all depend on what exactly it is that you intend to hunt.
