I do it. The thumb-down is my "I disagree" button. It's not as though thumbs-down take points away from people. I'm not saying I haven't been irritated when I received thumbs-down for a non-controversial answer, but it only takes a few seconds to realize that it doesn't make any difference at all. I'm a thumb-down abusing moron, and I certainly wouldn't want to rob any one else of that petty pleasure. My advice is that people should ignore it.

I answered a question earlier about listing favorite things that start with a C. I said Consideration, Caring, Consoling, chocolate. I got a bunch of thumbs down.

People have opinions and that is why there is a thumbs down button. Really the point of this forum, isn't it? Of course, I admit to it, but I didn't see your question of which you speak of. But, in general, that is the point of this forum. I think I hold a record on R&S for thumbs down, and I am quite proud of that.

In my case, I've noticed when asking a question sometimes everybody gets thumbs down, no matter what they answered! So I can only conclude someone doesn't like me and is taking it out on people nice enough to answer the question. Someone has to be downright nasty for me to give thumbs down.

Some people "thumbs down" because they see the person as "on the other side." I once got 3 "thumbs down" for asnwering a question about "person they admire the most" by telling them about my sweet dad. (And they don't even KNOW my dad!) :)

Thumbs down is the least of my complaints. If they only gave me thumbs down I'd be okay with that.

Not something to fret over, these people just do it because they think it makes them important.
I only give thumbs down for obvious evangelizing that doesn't even answer the question at hand.

i thumbs down people i disagree with if they didn't make a valid point (like they don't really answer the question), if they are rude, or if they don't have their facts right. never just because i disagree.

I would think it happens because people involve themselves so deeply into the issue that they find they can't let anyone express an opinion that opposes theirs.
I never use the thumbs down feature - freedom of speech means all opinions not just mine.
