Yes it is bad (it is NOT recommended), no water 30 minutes before a meal and no water for 30-60 minutes after eating. Also, no exercise for 30 minutes before eating and an hour after eating. Those big kids are prone to bloat!

ADD: Golden, no water after they eat because it can cause the kibble to expand in the stomach, hence causing gastric torsion, or bloat. My girls are not allowed to drink 30 minutes before eating and an hour after eating.

ADD2: Iggy, I sure am relieved I do not rely on the ER clinics near you! How scary they were giving you horrible advice!! I would seriously consider finding another vet that is thoroughly educated on the issue of large deep-chested breeds (like Rotts) and bloat (gastric torsion). Bloat is real and does kill. We preform anywhere from 4-9 bloat sx a year due to clients who allow their dogs to gulp water after eating, exercise after eating, or overeating. Scary stuff! I would find a new vet asap!

i believe an animal should have water available 24/7 . they drink as they desire / need. food should be limited to meal time(s) and treats one or two per day. people food very rarely if ever. we used to give our dog / leftover turkey meat or beef without any sauces , etc. only really on holidays as that was really the only time we had leftover meat i think. ask your vet if the thinking is still the same. it's been decades since i have owned a dog . i am looking to purchase a dog for someone else though . would be curious if this is still the correct thinking or if new studies/ information is better than it was years ago.

OKAY, no it is not....I have never heard of such a thing, so I got busy and called five after hours ER Vet Clinics and my own Vet...all the Vets,. the Vets, not someone that just works there, and every single one of them said, where did you get your information, I told them, and they all thought it was funny or an out right laugh.....No, it is not true per every single 5
Vets I personally spoke to.....water, before, during and after eating is fine, and exercise before or after eating is great, it helps the dog digest the food better, it will prevent it from just laying around in the dogs stomach.....they can digest it faster and better with movement.....

all stated, only time this would be true is if the dog is about to have or has just had surgery...and no other time....let them drink and exercise, its healthy and good for the dogs....

QUOTE, UNQUOTE per Licensed Vets....

My rottie drinks water sometimes after he eats and he has never gotten sick. He has also played after eating and the most that happens, is that he gets hiccups, which is normal for a puppy. They're dogs, water is not going to hurt them after they eat, some people here are really dramatic!

No all dogs should have water right there before and after they eat!

Pups & dogs should have water avaible to them at all times.

Vet Tech? Really no water after they eat??? See I learned something new! Thanks :).

Ok then Thanks for the reasoning. I can see that! Your such a smart cookie! ;)
