Use a Global coolant/antifreeze. Global meaning it is compatable with other coolants and will not cause any problem with your current coolant/antifreeze. It is compatible with all colors of antifreeze including Dexcool and can be bought at most auto parts stores.
Global Coolant/Antifreeze is formulated for, and is compatible with all American, Asian, and European automobile manufacturers.
Global Extended Life Coolant/Antifreeze meets ASTM D 3306 (automotive antifreeze), but has a higher silicate level than those outlined by ASTM D 4985 (heavy-duty antifreeze). It also meets ASTM D 6210 (fully formulated, precharged antifreeze), Caterpillar EC-1 and TMC of ATA RP329A.
It also meets or exceeds the following industry specifications as a concentrate or pre-diluted antifreeze/coolant.
• ANFOR R 15-601
• ASTM D 1384, D 2809, D 2570, D 3306, D 4340, D 4985, D 6210
• BS 6580 (British Standard)
• Caterpillar EC-1, DEAC
• Chrysler MS 7170 and MS 9769
• Cummins CES 14603 (as found in Service Bulletin 3666132-02)
• Daimler-Chrysler Automotive
• Detroit Diesel 7SE298 (DDC Powercool Plus & Powercool Plus 6000)
• Federal Specification A-A-870A (Superseded by A-A-52624A Type I Concentration A)
• Ford ESE-M97B44-A, WSS-M97B44-D, WSS-M97B51-A1FVV
• GM 1825/1899M/6277M (Dexcool)

Did not specify the year??? Pre 1993 model you can use preston. Do not buy premixed. Just buy the pure stuff and then mix it to 50/50 mixture, drain the entire system and change it every 2 years or 30,000 miles. From 1994 on you must use SAAB coolant. Do not take a chance and Do not mix anti freeze of different brand or color with each other. As you may know early model Saab similar to many other cars have problem with Head Gasket failure when the cooling system is not serviced properly. Not to mention that the radiator, water pump will also be failing due to the same reason. You do not need to take it to the Saab dealer. Find yourself a good shop that ONLY works on Saab, they'll have the proper coolant and be able to do it correctly and inexpensively. But make sure you follow whatever the manual is stating. It will definitely save you time and money in the long run. If you had specified the year of your Saab, it would then be possible to advise you on the specifics of the cooling system need for your Saab.

The important thing is to make sure the colors match. This may sound silly, but there are a lot of different coolants out there in people's Saabs: Green, Orange, Yellow, even purple and blue. Hopefully, it'll be green - standard 50/50 is ok. Orange is common too; it's called DexCool. Many Saabs also use a Mercedes-spec coolant or Pentosin or Zerex brand. If your coolant is not green, then just buy the correct color coolant and mix in your own water. I just use an empty water bottle, so I can match the amount of coolant I've dumped in with an equal amount of water. Non-green coolant is "long-life coolant." Mixing it with other colors will destroy the long-life ability of the coolant. Also, make sure that the engine is cool when you add in more coolant... otherwise you can crack your radiator!

I used to be a Saab technician. Never believe that all anti-freezes are alike. If you use typical American "green" anti-freeze in a Honda or Subaru, for example, in just a few years it will eat the cylinder heads out like Swiss cheese! DO NOT USE PRESTONE unless you want premature cooling system failure. Saab,as well as other foreign car manufacturers, have realized that there is more to anti-freeze than just ethylene glycol. Most modern non-American anti-freezes are phosphate-free and are denoted by different colors. Mercedes coolant, for example, is yellow, Audi coolant is blue or orange, Toyota and Honda are red. What does this mean?? They were formulated to reduce by product acids and are gentler on head gaskets, water pumps, and aluminum components. Some modern engine cooling system components are plastic. They too require special formulations in their anti-freeze to prevent melting. My advice is: Got to any foreign car dealership and buy only their name-brand coolant!!! Most foreign car anti-freezes are formulated similarly and simply protect your engines vitals better. Trust me!

Several years ago when standard Prestone anti freeze sold for $3 a gallon. I was picking up some parts at a Chevrolet parts counter.
I saw a sign that said Genuine GM Antifreeze $8.75 a gallon.
I said to the parts guy, you don't sell much of that, Do you?
His reply was "You would be surprised how many cases we sell every day because the owner's manual said to use nothing but Genuine GM Antifreeze.
The point is in today's engine the only thing you need to check is if it is regular Anti freeze of 5 year antifreeze.
The guy at the parts store (not dealer) will help you out.
All anti freeze will meet of exceed the manufacturer's specs.

You are stuck with the manufacturer recommendations, or whatever is safe for most European cars. Usually, Volvos, BMW, Mercedes, etc. all take the same stuff. Make sure the label clearly uses the word SAAB when shopping for Euro-friendly products. Also call three mechanics at three different places that specialize in SAABS. You know, go talk to Sven about it.

Saabs come with RED coolant from the factory, but the red can be replaced with generic green coolant if a proper flush is performed. When adding coolant, it doesn't matter what kind you already have, but it is important to not mix red and green. If it has red, you need to get red coolant from General Motors. If it has green, you can add green.

use that coolant... the official Saab coolant is produced by the same manufacturers that produce other branded coolant products.
