Here's a video of a confirmed +800yard shot, and several more.

While it would be difficult to say exactly how long the furthest shot ever was, there are some reports of people taking very long shots to kill deer. Elmer Keith (who developed the .44 magnum and helped to develop the .357 magnum) reportedly shot a deer at six hundred yards with a 6 inch .44 magnum revolver.
While it may be hard to believe that such a shot is possible, Bob Munden made an identical shot after setting up a balloon 600 yards away and shooting it to test whether or not Keith's claim was plausible. While the energy of such a shot at this range isn't going to be ideal, shot placement is very important. Also its notable that Keith didn't necessarily deliver the killing shot, but probably just finished off a poorly shot deer that someone he was guiding for hit in the first place.

Sorry but there is not classification for the longest deer shot. Im sure its up there amoung the longest sniper shots however, no one has ever made recording them offical. Would make a good category though........
Good Luck & Happy Shooting !!!!
Mike M,
Dont take this the wrong way but dont always believe everything you read. The 44 Mag has approx 661 ft lbs of energy at 200 yards at best. It drops 5 inches at 100 yards and nearly 22 inches at 200 yards. If he really made that shot he would have been pointing at nearly a 45 deg angle in the air and the slug would have felt like a bug flew into the side of the deer with no damage what so ever !
Thank you for the artical. I still cant believe he even hit the deer, but that does bring more light on the subject. Then again, many hunters have came up with some real good tales agreed ? Anyhow, 2 thumbs up for posting the artical to show your resources !!!!!

I don't think there is a record, but I've noted a disturbing trend. Us old hunters would have been ashamed to admit taking a shot at over a quarter mile, a most unethical proposition on unwounded game, where some people these days actually brag about being slob shooters. I suppose it takes all kinds.
Oh, and the Elmer Kieth story is there, and it was one of several attempts at a finishing shot after a wounding by a client he was guiding. Read "Hell, I Was There," his autobiographical book that talks a lot about his 44 shooting.

Competitive target shooters and military snipers brag about long shots, that's their objective.
Any hunter that brags about long shots is an irresponsible, inhumane and unsafe moron.
Hunting is about taking the shortest shot you can in the circumstance, making for a quick humane kill and minimizing risk to other hunters or people and tracking and finding your prey quickly.
This is why no one keeps records on the distance of the shot, as it would be a record of shame. .

I know for sure that Bobby Hart of RW Hart and Sons has the longest recorded kill of an Elk at over 1800 Yards and I have personally seen him shoot out over 2000. He holds Multiple titles for long distance competitions and in my opinion is one of the best NON-Military shooters in the world. They do sell videos of ULTRA-Long distance shooting through his store in Pa.
This is not a plug for his company but if its Long Distance your into these are the guys to know. They build some of the best Ultra Long Distance firearms in the world..
