Up until a few years ago It was the Petty 426 cu in Hemi--The Petty Hoods showed 440 HP. painted on the Hood. However Maurice Petty-Dale Inman and Buddy Parrott could modify these into 825 HP. Now However Most 358 Cu. In v-8s from HMS-JGR-RCR are capable of 800-850 Horesepower on Non Restrictor Plate Tracks!!!. This coupled with the Less weight of a Chevy 358 VS the Plymouth 426 makes it a better Powerplant!!!!

If I'm not mistaken the biggest Cubic inch allowed was the ford 429 it supposedly put out around 400 horses, The highest horse power is the 358 upward of 800 horses, todays 358 isnt near to what the old 358 use to put out which was upwards of 850

oh and all you mopar hemi fans that think the hemi is so badass and chrysler made the baddest engine, it was created by Chevy but chevy didnt like it and they sold it to chrysler...oh and it was only rated a 425 horses, but yes a built 426 could make more same as any built engine...Had to throw that out there

Ford 427 Side Oiler . It was made to combat the Hemi, but it outperformed it so bad NASCAR banned it because, legend has it Richard Petty cried about it.

The most peak power I have heard of was in the 860 range. This was 2007 Chevrolet R07 but wasn't the best race engine. Peak power does not make the fastest car. The highest average power an engine makes in the RPM range it is used in is what wins races.

The old Nascar 426 Hemi's were lots closer to 600 hp then they were to 800 from what I have heard.

Shoot. No doubt the 426 Hemi banned from competition somewhere around 1970. I forget the exact date but that sucker displaced 700 Ponies right out of the crate. I believe the Petty shop was known to tweak it out at over 800 horses.

but was the R07 actually a "stock car" engine? The Chrysler corporation put the 426 hemi into a minimum of 500 production models, to compete in NASCAR. Chrysler has remained the most dedicated to the sport as far as production models.
