Today in my Benedictine Oblate class at church, we discussed that very thing. It was about embracing the silence in our lives and in our prayer... one of the brothers at the abbey was telling us about how he feels the Holy Spirit much closer when he turns off the tv and the computer and all of the world's noise so that he can pray and meditate and write. Later he will be complimented on what he writes and yet he doesn't remember writing something that insightful. I feel this way too... things come out in my writing that don't even sound like me. It is true.. part of what makes God more manifest in our lives and His words better heard is silence. It makes what He wants to communicate to us more able to reach our spiritual ears. If you can find your silence and quiet the noise in your head and in your environment, it is a great gift.... making meditation and speaking to God much simpler and much deeper. Afterall, how can one begin to hear God if one is steeped in all the noise that we are so bombarded with on a daily basis?! I believe it is extremely important to practice and dicipline yourself to turn the noise off... to turn off that tv or cell phone or motor or computer or chatter inside of your head so that a lifestyle of silence and communion with God can thrive and continue.
