You can check the Social Security death index to find out if a Social Security Death benefit was applied for. This can be accessed for free at ssdi.rootsweb.com You can also do a google search for the person's name (put it in quotes, last name first like this "Dawson, Norm" to narrow the search). Then, if there is an internet copy of the obituary, it will turn up.

Good luck

Norm Dawson

RootsWeb.com is free. Click on either Obituary Daily Times, or the Social Security Death Index. If someone has died recently, they may not be on their for several months, or longer.

FreeBMD details deaths, but it's transcribed by volunteers so it's not complete yet. It's all free information though.
