Another Hatch.. sure just add more weight and more systems to an aircraft that already has over 1million parts. Just another thing that would have to be deffered for maintence.
Override the oxygen masks... hahahahahah. NO! Its a built in safety feature in case that pilots arent paying attention and forget to set the pressuriztion system, or if the cabin decompress rapidly or explosivly, if the system is overriden and the pilot forgets to arm it, then everyone in the aircraft would more than likely die.
I mean common, counter terrorism starts way before the person gets on the airplane, and the cockpit door is that very last line of defense. Armed pilots are not a good idea.. what if the pilot misses and hits a child. Then the airline is responsible. Just let the pilots have the leatherman mutlitools back so they can easily fix the burnt out cockpit light.

I'm sure that these measures have been thought of before and have been ruled out for technical reasons. For example the amount of oxygen and airpreasue can be dropped to a level where most passanger might pass out and then what open the cockpit door and you might run to a terrorist who has been training at altitude and is used to the reduced preasure. Planes don't like to have too many holes in them and another door means another hole.
I hate to agree with Bush but the best weapon we have against the terrorists is to just keep on doing what we normally do. Security at all airports around the world is a joke but we convince ourselves that it IS working and go flying anyway.
Agreeing with Bush gosh I feel so dirty now.

2 - Depressurization affects everyone differently depending on individual age and health. There is no single, SAFE depressurization setting or oxygen setting that will work CORRECTLY for everyone. While some sick or elderly people would be on the verge of death, other extremely healthy people may still be conscious. The point is that depressurization can cause deaths and even brain damage, depending on the health of the passenger. its more dangerous than using something as hazardous as sleeping gas. People might never regain consciousness.
1 - Separation is already more cost effectively achieved by the current procedures. If they saw the need to escalate the level of security, all they would need to do is change the type of lock to one that would only open on a timer or by a key not carried on the airplane or some other suitable contraption. no new door required.

Well if you mention the Langoliers in your proposal, no one will take you seriously... choose a different example... And the problem isnt the cockpit anymore, its impregnable. The terrorists can just as easily be in a sleeper cell... get jobs as legitimate pilots and then crash the plane (Egypt air co-pilot who down the plane for a supposed - family problem)

Do you think that anyone who can do something about it really wants to slow down a multi billion dollar business like terrorism. How much money has the war cost 100's of billions US well try to find how much has been made from this war try to find out. Think of the oil prices no oil flowing out of Iraq , the money being made by all the mercenaries all the defence companies the sur taxes at airports the construction contracts in the middle east. There are no public numbers that show how much the private controlling hands of the world economy are making off this sham. Perhaps there may be someone who may want to make money of YOUR idea!!

There are better ways to counter terrorism than that...
most airports screen passengers but many airport staff can get through most areas with a tag (or false tags). I think this is the weakest link. Airport staff especially those loading cargo and doing the maintenance can easily sabotage an airliner or pass weapons to hijackers

I can remember the boy scouts when i was a kid and they sure seemed more interested in collecting their "dues" than the well being of the boys in the group. I did not get much of an allowance as a child so coming up with the dues was not easy. I did not go far in the boy scouts and I did not care for it I kinda like your comparison the boy scouts and hitler youth never thought of it that way but i could see how it would work

Locking the door to the cockpit is a much less expensive way to alleviate this problem.
If the re-pressurization (or not descending to 10,000 feet), is not done fast enough, everyone would die.
Keep thinking.

The best solution could be to stop selling weapons by the G8 countries, but...they are not interested, because violence and wars are a big business.
