I have a 6 lb. 2 year old yorkie who can't seem to hold anything down and I have no clue why. I've been to the vet and they took an x-ray and blood test and have found nothing. They sent me home with Flagyl, Amoxi, and Cimetidine but he still can't eat and throws up the little bit of water that he does drink. I'm so frusturated because I haven't given him anything to make him so sick and he hasn't been exposed to anything. The doctors don't know what this is. Does anyone have a yorkie who had similar problems? Is it possible that the medicine can make him worse being that there is nothing in his stomach???

Yorkies have VERY sensitive stomachs. I'm not sure whereabout you are located but here in Louisiana my yorkie picked up a type of "doggy stomach flu". I'd give him a few days to see if he gets better, if not bring him back to the vet. The biggest concern is his water intake. I made sure when mine was sick that he drank water vs. giving him food!

Good luck! Hope your baby starts feeling better and I hope I've been of a little help!

Merry Christmas!

Tagament (cimetidine) is a natural chemical that stimulates stomach cells to produce acid, or can cause the suppression of stomach acid in situations where there's too much. This will help him keep stuff down. Make sure he gets it- it aids in digestion and will most likely keep him from throwing up anything he does try to eat.

The other two are antibiotics to treat infections. It's possible he's just got a stomach bug. It happens to dogs, too. I would give him the medication as the doctor prescribed, but at the first moment things look worse, stop giving them to him and go back to see your vet or a second vet for another opinion.

I agree on talking to a different vet, and have them check for pancreatitis (ask about the Spec cPL test, available through IDEXX, which has a much higher success rate for diagnosing pancreatitis in dogs than a normal amylase/lipase test - http://www.idexx.com/animalhealth/laboratory/speccpl/).

From the meds, it sounds like they're treating for stomach ulcers or Helicobacter. The Cimetidine is supposed to reduce acid production in the stomach, and Flagyl and Amoxi are both antibiotics. If you have concerns about your dog taking the meds on an empty stomach, be SURE to talk to your vet and get his/her input. Since he is the one who prescribed it, he is the one who should tell you whether or not to continue.

But having had Mini Schnauzers, my first thought is always "pancreatitis" when I hear "vomiting and can't keep water down". And if it IS pancreatitis, encouraging the dog to eat and drink will only make it worse, not better.

You need to get some baby non-flavored pediolyte and let it drink all it wants. This will replace the electrolytes it has lost during neausea. Also Place a dab of honey,or karo syrup on its tongue to elevate its sugar level which is probably low from not eating.Continue the meds if pet is holding that down, but you may want to give the pediolyte a short time to settle its stomach. The pet can survive on the pediolyte alone for a day or so,along with the sweet syrup to keep sugar level up.After stomach is settled, try boiling some chicken, cut in small pieces, put in blender with small amount of water and puree it,most pets will eat this when nothing else.If the pet continues not to eat,you must force feed it the pediolyte and pureed chicken.Hope this helps as it hasn't failed me yet.

I too have a Yorkie. My Yorkie developed pancreatitis. She vomited and cried. The vet was clueless as to what was going on with her. I spoke to a regular doctor that actually gave the best advice. I kept my pup in the bathroom (warmest room in the house). I put a warmed rice pack in her bed under her blanket and kept her NPO for 24 hours. Then I gave her boiled white rice with a chicken broth over it in a bowl. The rice is bland and the chicken broth is soaked into it. She nibbled at it but it at least stayed down. It took a couple of days of chicken broth and white rice before she settled down.

I hope this helps.

How long has it been? Could your dog have gotten into something in the yard? What kind of blood test did they do,there are alot of different tests they can do.If he does'nt hold food down after a few days, i would think that would be a problem, take him back to the vet. That goes for any dog that cant' hold anything down for longer than a few days.Good luck.

Different Vet .. you need to get a different vet
I would be trying to contact one tonight ... an emergency vet

these dogs are way too small for such things to continue

They can become hypoglycemic overnight
also because of their small size they can dehydrate very very quickly

Can not believe the vet just sent you home
These things can turn fatal .. do not want to upset you, I just do not want anything to happen to your little baby

Much good luck to you ...

I would definitely take him to a different vet and get a second opinion. If they are not sure what it is they shoudl be able to run some tests to find out what it is. Could he have eaten something outside? Like a snail that has already picked up a snail bait?

try giving him a bout 1/2 a teaspoon of kaopectade or pepto bismal to settle his stomach down.give to him every 5 or 6 hours and see if it helps.gatorade or any kind of sports drink will give him minerals and rehydrate him.small amouts of bland food like cooked chicken or hamb mixed with cooked rice and water every few hrs to eat might help after his tummy settles.if it contines seek another vets advice or call urs back and explain that he is no better. he might have some other kind of problem like thyroid, diabetes etc so keep at the vet. i hope he is just having a off few days. my husky did this until i gave him the pepto and the next day he was back to normal. good luck

if the vomiting has not stopped, he needs to be on iv fluids. he also needs injectable medications, not oral right now. anything you give him orally will only make his vomiting worse. what blood test did your vet run? did he check for pancreatitis? if your vet is not offering any answers or recommending that you little guy be on fluids either iv or sub q, then you absolutely need to seek a second opinion.
