Did you calculate your basal metabolic rate? On top of that, you add calories from activities...
The lowest amount of calories you should eat while dieting is your Basal Metabolic rate.. The amount of calories your body would burn if you laid in bed all day..
http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html
There's a BMR calculator for you..
I eat about 500 calories more then my BMR to lose weight as I have a very active job.. If you lose weight to fast, you end up in a starvation mode and quit losing weight.. If you find your losing more then a couple lbs a week after the first week, increase your calories a bit..

A healthy diet consists of 1500-1800 calories (for girls) which I'm going to assume you are. You should be losing about 3 pounds a week...if you are losing less, you can eat fewer calories (just 100-200 will do the trick) and if you are losing more, start eating more calories! 3 pounds is THE healthy amount to lose...unless you are morbidly obese with like 150+ pounds to lose, any more than that can be unhealthy and dangerous.
I think that the average person needs to burn 3500 calories a week to lose a pound, (that's eating 1800 calories a day I believe), so just 500 calories a day. That being said, make sure you watch how much you work out as it too can become dangerous.
Losing weight is a tricky business. Just eat healthy (1500-1800 calories a day, fruits and veggies!) and exercise every day (30-60 minutes) and you'll be fine! Just don't get sick of the elliptical...you might wanna try other crosstraining (biking, swimming), jogging/running every once in a while, and lifting weights.
Best of luck! Hope this has helped :)

Have you talked to your doctor? Or anybody competent at the gym?--assuming your elliptical isn't a home model. They're probably able to help you a lot more than I am!
But since you've asked here . . .
Where are you getting your calculation? The government requires the numbers on food packages to be calculated based on 2,000 cal a day.
My guess is that you're actually calculating only the calories you burn in the exercise--which if it's fairly intense elliptical, and you're a bit bigger than the average woman (I don't mean fatter, I mean bigger), could very easily reach 1,000!
Another possibility is that you're absolutely tiny, you burn maybe 400 calories in an hour of light exercise, and do nearly nothing the rest of the day.
A third possibility is that your calculation is wrong!
In any case, let's look at just the first website I found, http://www.absolutefitinc.com/Cal_lose_weight.htm
It first suggests you cut below your maintenance level by no more than a thousand (which would mean fasting on water alone) or 500 (which still seems way radical for you). But then it suggests 15-20% of your maintenance amount, which would be 150 to 200.

Everyone has a different metabolic rate so charts showing how much you burn a day is only an estimate and may not be correct for you. If you are trying to lose weight, start reducing the fats and fried foods for a whole week. If you haven't lost even half a pound, cut back a bit more and eat larger salads (with very little dressing). When your weekly weigh-in shows a loss of a pound or so, continue with the same amount for another week. Check your weight again. When you've adjusted your food intake so that you're losing just a pound or so (no more) a week, you've got it right! Stay away from sugar.

You 'burn' calories all the time whatever you're doing. If you use more calories than you consume you'll lose weight. You will be 'burning' fat just by sitting in a chair. It's clear that you don't understand the relationship between calorie intake and calorie usage.

Your basil metabolism is probably 1000, but if you do an hour of workout everyday you could probably bump it up to about 2100 that you're burning daily. For every 3500 calorie deficet you lose a pound. So, if you were to cut back 500 calories a day, then in one week you'd lose a pound.

Not enough information. Go to the Mayo Clinic site to enter your information. it will tell you how much to eat each day in order to maintain your weight. From there each 3500 calories you eat less than your alloted calorie count you lose 1 pound. so if you should eat 2000 to maintain, eating 1500 each day will help you to lose 1 pound in a week. (500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories = 1 pound).

If your goal is to lose weight, of course you must consume less calories than you burn. However, I don't think you have calculated your calories burned daily correctly since someone of average weight burns more than that without exercise.

3000. Because your supposed to consume about 2000 cals a day. Since you burn 1000 a day, then eat 2000.
