When my 16 year old has bad breath, I mix up parsley with a little milk and he hasn't got bad breath for at least a week. I know what you are going through because dog's bad breath really is a smell on its own. If it's too bad, I can nearly vommit.

The most common cause of bad breath is tartar buildup surrounding the teeth. As in people, small particles off food remain in the mouth after eating. These particles decompose creating conditions where oral bacteria thrive. These bacterial grow to form plaque which is a combination of bacteria, mineral and decomposed food. Plaque and associated oral infections give the pet’s breath an objectionable odor. Plaque also clings to the base of teeth causing the gums to become inflamed and recede. Inflamed gums leak blood serum with combines with and increase the amount of plaque. This plaque or calculus is visible as a hard yellowish coating on the outer base of the teeth. Get your vet to check your dogs mouth regulary and book him/her in to have a good teeth cleaning on a regular basis.
Feeding chewy treats, bones, rawhide and treats impregnated with enzymes minimize dental plaque. Nylon bones work equally as well if the pet accepts them. Dog biscuits are of little value in preventing tartar buildup.

I would take a look at your dogs teeth to see if there is any decay also see if your dogs teeth are not loose if there is decay I would take the dog to the vets where they will clean and remove any rotten teeth. I would also buy dogs tooth paste and brust their teeth if they don't like a tooth brush then use a old cloth and put some dog tooth paste on and brush the teeth. Good luck.

Your dogs teeth may need to be scaled. Talk to your vet.
Consider switching to a premium brand dry kibble. Wet food tends to stick to teeth, whereas dry food will actually help clean the plaque off your dog's teeth while he's eating.
There are also mints for dogs available. Check your local pet store.

Try treats, chews, and toys specifically meant to clean teeth and clear up bad breath. Also, consider the source of your problem...the dog may need his teeth cleaned, either by you or by a vet or groomer.

I would take the dog to the vet and have his teeth cleaned professionally every few years. Also make sure to brush your dogs teeth as often as you can.

I had this problem with our dachshund. I purchased a spray doggy breath freshener at Petsmart for under $10, and it also helped with tarter.
