Let Me start off by saying I am a Christian but by no means a fundamentalist. Honestly I don't care much for Organized Religion at all. Too much dogma for My benefit, but that's neither here nor there.
But what I want to know is this, what is this ongoing conflict between the Christians and Athesists accomplishing in here?
I'm very curious to know why Ya'll keep dragging it on and on. I really feel it makes both sides look bad.
I would truly enjoy being able to come to this section to ask an answer question in this section, but wise men fear to tread in here because of all the flying lead.
I just want to know....why this little mini war?
It's fine to try to talk and help people to believe that there is a God or isn't a God or whatever your Beliefs might be, but I doubt You are going to convert many people with howling negativity.

Please don't hate Me, I'm just curious about all this

Hell, religiously speaking, they pretty much used to burn people like myself at the stake once upon a time (I'm more Pagan and or Wiccan than anything else)- this coming from a very lapsed Catholic (Catholicism being the worst, most evil of them all, IMO)

What does the ongoing conflict boil down to?

Basically this:

"My pee pee is bigger than your pee pee".

These tossers arguing about which religion is better should give it a rest. These types of arguements, on any scale have caused the world in general more bloody grief over the years than Aphrodite's got water holes, okay? They're all the f-cking same when you get right down to brass tacks...check out the documentary "Zeitgeist" sometime, you'll see what I mean.

I'm atheist and the first time I went on this section a while ago, all I got was "You're going to rot in hell", coming from complete strangers. I was trying to answer a question about the evolution theory but a lot of the answers on this site has gone beyond just giving each other knowledge and viewpoints and just to plain bashing. Yes, I know my spiritual views may seem stupid to others, but it is my belief and it doesn't make me any better or worse of a person. I cannot force myself to believe in something I do not believe in (I tried to become Christian at one point, I really did try to believe, it just didn't work) and I think we should all respect each others point of views and beliefs.
I think why it gets so rowdy here is because people are very passionate about their beliefs and get very defensive when they believe what they believe in is getting attacked. I understand defending you beliefs, but please, don't tell me repeatedly to go to hell, that's why I quit this section, I get told by people that know nothing about me that I'm a bad person. I respect people of all different religions, I would appreciate some respect back, but you know... people get rowdy when they're passionate, I can't really blame them.
WHOA! This is a long rant :0 ) <~~~~ note the space between the nose and mouth
Good Question btw
Politics section is pretty crazy too!

Well I'm from the UK and I find American fundamentalism really weird. I mean it's like finding a passionate group of "Flat Earth" believers and I suppose being an Atheist in small town America could be really oppressive. Answers is a good place to let off steam without danger.

I'm also interested in what people actually believe, I'm finding that some of the beliefs are so primitive that they are actually near to belief in magic, not a Christian concept at all. As for the Atheists I can't speak for them as I'm an Agnostic with a Catholic background and friends.

I think the "howling negativity" people do it to get a monkey off their back. They vent here instead of at their wife/co-worker/mom.

I think the more rational ones come here because they want to discuss these things. I used to be a fundy and am now an Atheist. Patient friends talked to me for hours while I worked these issues through. So I am open to discussing these same things. I know when I was a fundy, I had totally misunderstood Atheism. So I'm here to correct those misconceptions.

Also...I have this theory that since I used to be VERY religious at an early age...I am "wired" for this topic. It's just now, the wiring is in reverse. I still like talking about it, but not for "turn or burn" reasons.

I hope that helps illuminate.

I agree with you. I think it goes on because so many atheists get pleasure out of trying to get the Christians riled up. Most of the questions, you need to ignore and move on and there are a few people who have sincere questions who want help/advice. I have heard alot of Christians say they are fed up with this site and move on because of those issues you mention. Unfortunately, when that happens, this turns into a hate site against Christians. I saw that earlier today. Then you walk away from the keyboard until some normalcy returns.

I have to add, I don't get personally attacked on here, (except when I asked about praying). But, I have seen a lot of disrespect and just plain lack of human compassion from atheists toward people who were just asking innocent questions or looking for help. I hope some mature concern counteracts some of the childish disrespect I have seen toward people who are hurting or searching.

It's not just the Christians and the atheists on here, we all get pretty heated from time to time. Everyone believes that their way is the right way and many people get downright nasty when you say something that contradicts what they believe. Glad that you aren't one of those, and I promise that I don't' hate you. Thank you for not howling your beliefs at me and simply stating your religion I"ll return the favor. I'm pagan and I wish that we could just all get along to, but even I get caught up in some of these debates and find myself getting angry. Take deep breaths and learn how to duck and dodge quickly, because on here everyone eventually gets their feelings hurt. On the upside, you usually get several honest and kind answers as well.

Afternoon Darth :)
And to think I thought it was hard to be a Pagan in this place!

The most common flying lead here seems to be the thumbs downers ~ now I'm waiting for the ricochet!
{I know, I know, but I just had to quote it!}

I really don't understand why there is so much animosity between the two sides ~ to my mind, people have a right to their own beliefs, and as long as they aren't actually hurting anyone, they should be allowed to believe what they want.

As a Christian it is wired into me by God's love to try to at least present the gospel of salvation to others. I hope the athiests realize, I don't get a prize for trying to help them. I only do it because I want to see them have a wonderful life after this life. I could just as easily go on about my business without worrying about them at all. But as Jesus said, go out into the highways and byways and compel them to come in so that is what I try to do.
When I see the posts from the athiests, they are usually demeaning, using extremely bad language, and insulting. I think just that alone says something.

Sometimes it's hard to keep your cool in this room.

I have Christian friends that I would NEVER say the things to them that I have said to "Christians" in this forum. But they would not say the things to me that I've heard in here from the fundies.

Welcome to the group. For the most part you act like a decent human being, you get treated as such. There are some people that just will NOT respect another persons choices.

They are the ones I go after.

Peace.

The war continues because our beliefs conflict with each other. If Bob the Atheist weren't over hear bashing my faith, I could leave him alone, otherwise I'm just a hypocrite looking for entertainment...If Bob the Atheist weren't over here bashing my faith...There is a serious lack of respect on both ends....one that is determined to disprove the other, the other that is determined to spread the truth. You could say its pointless, but the war continues on...
