This question was asked here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070830085555AAEyxHC
But I had a few more questions related to the subject:
Has anyone or does anyone know of someone who has successfully enlisted in the military as a classified 1A0 non-combatant, or recieved non-combatant status after enlisting?
If so, what MOSs/AFSCs/Ratings were available to you/them? (Medical positions are commonly mentioned, are there any others available? I'm hoping specifically for an engineering position, most likely in the Air Force.)
Does anyone have any factual or experiental data on the likelihood of being accepted or denied enlistment as a result of applying for non-combatant status, and any factors that affect that likelihood (such as recruiting needs, Active/Reserve status, ASVAB scores, stressed AFSCs, personal impressions, etc.)?
If you have personal experience with this process or know someone who does, is there any other advice you have?
Thank you for your assistance!

Non-combatant status is associated with those who have been conscripted, not those who voluntarily enlist. The laws dealing with non-combatant status are limited to those within the purview of the selective service system. I know of several draftees who served as unarmed medics in the Army. All were draftees. One received the Silver Star for bravery exhibited in the Battle of Okinawa in World War Two. A number of members of the Seventh Day Adventists served as unarmed medics in the Army during Vietnam, but (again) all were draftees.
We have an all-volunteer force. Therefore, there is no compulsion to join. If one feels that being armed and engaging in the killing of other human beings is a violation of their religious or moral beliefs, my advice is simple: Don't join!

Have you looked into the Coast Guard? Not a whole lot of us go combat, but we still have the coolest jobs. maybe seek a Coast Guard recruiter and ask to visit some of the small boat stations or even one of the big cutters if there is one in port.

Have you contemplated that they are called the "Armed Services" for a reason? Perhaps you might consider one of the other uniformed services or go Coast Guard if you are really feeling hardcore.
