Uh, they're like a dollar. And the Navy is NOT too cheap to pay for them. Enlisted troops receive, as part of their monthly pay, an allowance for uniform upgrades and maintenance. Being that ribbons and stripes are part of the uniform, their purchase by him is exactly why the Navy pays him more money every year.

Of course, it normally works out that troops don't need to refresh their uniforms as often as the government expects them to, so perhaps you'd rather him lose a repeated portion of his pay so that the navy will pick up the one dollar ribbon for him?

The Navy isn't too cheap to pay for them. Your son probably blew his uniform allowance at his enlistment date and had to pay for them out of his regular pay. If he makes chief you'll probably have a stroke at the $1200 up front he has to pay.

Nobody makes much money in the military. Everyone's aware of that when the volunteer. Build a bridge and get over it.

The bars he earned are for years of service. They go on his dress uniform, which he is responsible for keeping currently adorned. They do not go on his ACUs (or fatigues), which he wears every day. After 3 years of enlisted service your son receives the standard rate of $410.40 each year for military clothing allowance. I think he can get those bars taken care of with that.

as for the bars- they cost less the 5 dollars. And for uniforms... well he should have a clothing allowance. If he can not afford to pay with the allowance then he blew it on something else and it's his fault he can't pay for it.

They're not all that expensive, and they do get an uniform allowance for such things. EVERYONE has to pay for them, including rank patches, uniform, medals, bars, etc.

Just an important note - if he's REQUIRED to have them, they can't force him to pay for them (not his first ones, anyway) - they've got to provide them.

Tell him to talk to Supply.

The military can not require you to have something that you've got to pay for yourself.

They may tell him to suck it up and get to clothing and sales, but he can check with supply first.

I guess he can just turn down the promotion if he can't afford it.

Risking your life for bars is pretty stupid.
