They are putting the trainees in a stressful environment, and making them make decisions, and get used to reacting under pressure. Combat wont be easy; neither should the training.
Don't get me wrong; basic training SUCKED, and if you asked me this question while I was there, I'd probably have the same opinion. It's just one of those evils you put up with for the greater good. I kept feeling like there was no way I was going to make it through, but one by one, the weeks crept by, and I made it. It was the best feeling of my life.
One point you made that I will reiterate is that it is a volunteer MIlitary. Those that can't deal with someone yelling at them probably wouldn't do well if someone was shooting at them. Would you agree?
There are dirt-bag drill sergeants that get off on that stuff, but the majority of them are good guys, and actually hate what they do not because they want out, but because they remember what it was like to be the private being yelled at.
It is getting better though. The physical contact is gone, and there's less punishment just for being a private, and more corrective training for screwing up. Which is how it should be.

I'm just guessing here, but you're not prior service are you? I'm even willing to bet, you may have gone to boot camp and did not make it!
If you were you would know that these recruits are being trained to do some awfull stuff. They need to know to Follow orders without asking, discipline, organization, physical AND mental strength. If they can not handle being yelled at, they will certainly not be able to handle being shot at!
These "mean" DI's or RDC's (For the Navy, I was one) have been there and done that. They know what is expected in the fleet or field. They are doing what is needed to turn Men into professional Soldiers, Marines, Airman, and Sailors.

You're mistaking the purpose of DI's.
They need to make a Soldier out of a civilian. A good Soldier does what they need to do without being told - and knows why. Civilians don't know that stuff yet.
War isn't a tea party. Neither is boot camp. It's preparation for real Military life.
And they're not treated like garbage - that's an exaggeration. Maybe if they can't handle the harsh realities of being in the service, they need to get out - not the DI's.
They're not bullies - they're decorated and honorable Soldiers who want to toughen up civilians and make them strong.

Rent the movie "The Boys in Company C". Early in the movie the Senior Drill Instructor has all his Cherries grab their package. He now has 80 guys doing a MJ while he is screaming at them. I don't remember the exact lines but it goes something like this.
"DO YOU LIKE THEM? DO YOU WANT TO COME HOME WITH THEM? THEN YOU BETTER LISTEN TO YOUR DRILL INSTRUCTORS!!! THEY WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO KEEP THOSE PATHETIC LITTLE THINGS!!!
What was so memorable to me is just how much the guy looked and sounded like my Senior DI at Ft. Ord.
Are you really so lacking in common sense that you do not know they are teaching young men how to let the other poor dumb schmuck die for his country?????

Those Drills have one purpose and one purpose only. And that is to start teaching you to stay alive. You go into combat without being ready to react to a command instantly and without question and your family may be missing you .
Get the picture?

life in the U.S. is not as hard as it is for the countries that we sometimes go to war with. the drill instructors must get the volunteers mentally and physically prepared for the most violent act of mankind... war.

They're mean because part of the initial training is breaking a recruit down so they're more pliable to the training they're receiving. Looking back on training, they weren't mean to us, they were trying to make us good service members.

they have to be that way to stress you out. Combat is not the place,or any military job for that matter, to find out you crack under pressure. There is a reson behind everything they do,its called training for the military lifestyle. Its nothing personal.

If you think they are bad, just wait until you are looking down the barrel of a gun pointed at you. You would be best to look for another line of work.
