Actually, the Romans did not fear Jesus, they did not care!
But the Pharisees and the Sadducee's of the Jewish nation did care and fear Jesus.
The reason is He would have taken away their politicial and financial gravy train.
He called them, liars, vipers, and followers of their Father Satan: the Father of the Lie.
So it was these Jews that whipped up support to impale Jesus, it was these Jewish leaders that led the chant to free Barabbas.
They also broke their own religious law when they held a MOCK trial on the eve of Passover to condemn Jesus.
No Jew works on the Pass over....EVER! So they even broke their own traditions out of hate and fear.
The Romans, not wanting an uprising of Jews, just went along with it, but really did not care what the out come was between these people. So long as it did not create a civil war that the Romans would have had to put down.

Hey Cherry,
This is for you. Romans used crosses. That was their way of putting criminals to death. I know you feel it was a stake due to the fact that you are a JW. The scriptures say tree which is correct, but those trees can be made into crosses. In fact they can be made into a ton of other things like books too. Jesus wasn't hung on a book, or a chair, or a roll of paper...all made from trees. The cross was in fact Romans way of making a statement. Mess up and you'll end up crucified. Peter was crucified upside down....on a cross. He felt he wasn't good enough to die upright like Jesus so he insisted to do it upside down...again on a cross.

If I recall, the Jews selected Jesus to be crucified, it was the custom to free a prisoner. Pilate if anything, sympathized with the plight of Jesus.

Roman society was the first to base 'class' and 'status' in society on monetary wealth.
Jesus came along and preached that women, children and slaves, not to mention the poor, were equal in the sight of God as their 'masters' or as the rich society dudes. \
This was a radical idea and the Romans were worried about the many followers Jesus had, and were afraid His teachings would undermine society as they knew it.
Jesus also taught that there was a higher authority than Cesar, namely God, to whom people owed their first loyalty.
The whole concept was considered subversive to society and the government.

Pilate acquiesced to the crucifixion to keep the Jewish religio-political leadership happy. They wanted Jesus crucified because of his violent, whip-wielding assaults on people at the Temple and seditious rabble rousing.
