I looked at "know your rights" and their statement is that rangers in charge of private property have no authority to arrest or detain you. They are just mall cops. They can have you kicked out of the park and then call the police for criminal trespass if you return while your under suspension. This is a very important topic though because there are so many restrictions in place and the more power we as citizens give law enforcement the more limited our rights become. Just because you stepped on a rock that is considered dangerous area does not mean you should be arrested or detained. Americans have lost their perspective on what their freedom actually means and how it should look and feel. If you give law enforcement more power over you with more laws on the books or more obscure interpretations then you all them the ability to interpret what you can or can't do with your freedom to do it. I may not be 100% on what a ranger has the authority to do with you if he/she wants to limit or restrict your freedom but I do know that there is plenty of things they can do to make you miserable with the assistance of local law enforcement.

Well, I think that the park rangers have jurisdiction within the confines of the state or national lands. Also the state police can arrest you and turn you nover to the county or, if damages exceed a certain amount, prosecute you in Federal Court where the judges are a bit more stricte and don't play.
Why? What did you do in the park that caused you to ask this?

No, they can not arrest you in the way you are suggesting. There are no jail cells in national parks. However if you are committing a crime in their park/jurisdiction they are authorized to forcible detain you until the state police arrive.
