If you were to drive from John Wayne to LAX it takes about 30 min, with traffic maybe an hour. The flight itself says it takes 30 min, (United Airlines website). The tickets cost around 250 and up, gas still isn't that expensive!

Statistically air travel is still very much safer than driving on the highway. It's an old axiom that says you have more chance of getting killed driving to and from the airport than you do on the plane. Food for thought. Cheers!!

Most of the time, people who are making this flight are trying to connect in LAX to go somewhere else. Depending on where you live, John Wayne might be more convenient and there are not too many non-stops from John Wayne, especially long hauls like to the East coast or Internationally. Airlines will advertize these short segments but don't always sell them--- the plane is going there anyway to get people from John Wayne to Atlanta or London by way of LAX so they might as well offer it to anyone who really wants to take the short hop, but you'll find that most of the people on that short flight are not ending up at LAX; they're going on to somewhere else.

The other reason (especially this time of the year) is "mileage running." That's what frequent flyers do to boost their annual travel miles and hopefully get a higher level of status with the airlines. The actual trip in the air is only about 100 miles roundtrip but airlines usually give 500 miles as the minimum for any flight. So I can take the trip between LAX and John Wayne two or even three round-trips in one day. 500 miles per segment, times 6 segments, and I have 3000 miles in my account without even having to leave the area code. It's not the most cost-effective way to get miles but if it's December and you're 2500 miles short of Platinum status and all its extra benefits, but you can't go away for a whole weekend to get the miles, you can just hop back and forth and collect your miles. Or if you're flying to the East coast already, leaving from John Wayne instead of LAX will add a little time to your trip but you get 1000 more miles (500 each way) and that's very important to the frequent flyers.

I'm not sure. I would guess that most people are flying from John Wayne Airport to somewhere else and are only making a connecting flight at LAX. But I'm not sure. Doesn't make sense to me.

If I lived near John Wayne Airport, wanted a much easier airport to fly from than LAX, and had a connecting flight through LAX, then it makes perfect sense, especially if it is expensed.

There must be some people that really hate I405 with a passion. It's never taken me more than 45mins to do that trip, including doing the first part on PCH, dropping the hire car off and taking the shuttle bus to LAX.

United is like that. They once had a flight which went from Oakland to San Francisco International.
