I have thought and wondered if suicide is considered blasphemy against God. From what I know blasphemy against God is a sin that is probably unforgivable.

I often wonder about how suicidal people deal with life similar to me. I don't understand why there are so many depressing misfortunes that are in my life. Why does God make us jump through so many hoops in life. Sometimes I feel as though I'm a circus monkey constantly going through hoops.

Don't get me wrong life isn't perfect but for those of us who are suicidal its not fair. Can someone clarify things for me?

If you are feeling suicidal then please call the National Suicide Hotline now:

=====

Blasphemy is speech, thought, or action involving contempt for God or the Church, or persons or things dedicated to God.

Suicide is more a sin of pride and, of course, murder. This person puts themselves in the place of God, breaking the first Commandment.

Catholics believe suicide when committed in full knowledge and deliberate consent is a complete turning away from God (a mortal sin) and will send a person to hell.

There are 3 conditions of a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent.

While suicide (or any kind of murder) is always a grave matter, people who commit suicide may not always have full knowledge of what they're doing. Drugs can definitely impair one's thinking, as can other things, such as diseases, intense pain, or anguish.

Therefore, suicide is not automatically treated as a mortal sin.

We are commanded by Christ not to judge others so we leave final judgment to God who alone knows each person's heart.

The Code of Canon Law does not list suicide as a reason to deny a person a Catholic funeral. http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P4C.HTM

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
On mortal sin, paragraphs 1857-1859: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect1chpt1art8.htm#1857
On suicide, paragraphs 2282-2283: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art5.htm#2282

With love and prayers in Christ.

I think life can be pretty crappy, sometimes when I get in a certain head space, I do fantasise about ending it all. I would say anyone who says they haven't is lying a little about that. Sometimes feeling like you're trying so hard but noone cares, it gets me down, I don't know about other people. But then, its the smallest thing, you see someone smile at you. Or someone do something nice and you think, god there are some nice ppl. on this planet. This I know for sure. I also know I have felt depressed before and then a few days later felt totally different about things. I think expecting life to be perfect is a guarantee for unhappiness, I mean celebrities who have what we think would make us happy, money, success, beauty, love they struggle too, or turn to drugs. At the end of the day noone has a perfect life, and if someone is truly happy, I think they've learned that it comes from within and not without. Meditation, exercise, eating healthy, listening to positive thinking tapes and keeping busy, meeting friends, talking. These things help keep my head bobbing above water. I think that's the same for alot of people. I would never end my life, because you never know what's around the corner. Death means no chance, no hope. Where there's life there's hope. There is a lifetime of experiences in front of you, I promise you they won't ALL be good, but I promise they won't ALL be bad. I hope you really aren't considering suicide, I care, I don't want you to, and I've never met you. People at the core are nearly always good, just sometimes misunderstood and hurting. I hope you find what you are looking for, a good friend, simple peace within yourself. Just don't give up. And whether or not its considered blasphemous, I just don't know, God I think would love us for ourselves with all our flaws and mistakes, that's my idea of God. But if God put you on this planet, I'm sure he wanted you to be here and be happy. Don't give up!!!!!

1.disagree. I think there are several variables that can occur that cause a suicide. Several of them may render the person helpless to make a wise decision in that moment. Also, if they didn't pass immediately. They can also be granted a chance to truly repent. 2.I can't think of the verse/verses at this moment, sorry. But I guarantee you.The Bible does say that the mentally challenged will be saved.Sometimes that is the problem. Not always though.Lots of people are weary, tired, and hurting. But, you must remember its ultimately the judgement of God, not us. I'm truly very sorry about your friend.

if the suicide is an act of despare on your part, it is the unforgiveable sin, in that you dont hope in God, you break the commandment thou shalt not kill by killing yourself.
ask God to bring good out of your jumping thru the hoops. No ones life is perfect. we all go thru trials and sufferings, but we dont all consider to end it all, we know this shall pass if we are patient. God love you!!

It's not blasphemy against God but it's bad and blasphemy against God is not the only way to send yourself to hell a series of bad decisions can do that as well.

There is only one unforgivable sin. That sin is not a one time act. It is CONTINUALLY resisting the Holy Spirit. That means going against what God is telling you to do, and what you know to be right, because God's moral law is written on every heart. I always believed that suicide is unforgivable, but now I believe God looks on the heart; weather you kill yourself out of pride(because you think you deserve better) or you do it in a moment of weakness, HE is the Judge of that. If one thinks about killing themselves, that is premeditated, and more likely that it is because OF the unforgivable sin, but is not the unforgivable sin itself. On the other hand, say, you loose someone close to you, and you go in to a deep depression, and, not in your right mind, you kill yourself, I don't believe that is unforgivable, because that is in your mind, not what is truly in your heart.

I hope this helps!

Yes. It ties in with the 7 grievous sins against the Holy Spirit: despair.

Of course many people who kill themselves are mentally ill, and this doesn't apply to them.

But if you're sane (whatever THAT means...) and you choose to give in to despair instead of waiting on God's healing, then that is a blasphemy. You're basically telling God that you are too far gone for even Him to help you. God can always help us if we wait for Him to help us.

This is not just theoretical for me: I suffered with major depression and suicidal thoughts most of my adolescence and early adulthood. Growing up gay and a jock and a faithful Catholic and a member of FFA in rural Louisiana was no bed of roses.

I cant really determine who your referring to as suicidal so Ill just refer to you. First to answer your question " Is suicide considered blasphemy against god?" Oh come on do you know what blashpemy is? blasphemy is done in words against God, its like making statements that insult God. it is the use of harsh words that are used to insult God in all his forms, God is present in all things or as people say, he is present in words, love, people, creation and all that stuff you probably heard at school. So NO Suicide is not Blasphemy. But it is WRONG and Immoral. So just incase Suicide is an Issue just to you in case you think life is not fair,, let me ask you do you think that life revolves around what you think? Do you think the world will stop to function if you commit suicide? HELL NO is the answer, even if you commit suicide Christmas will still be on the 25th of December, Business will go on, Oil prices will continue to hike, the war in Iraq will wage on. Suicide doesnt make the world a better place, it just leaves you looking like **** and if you have a soul who knows where youl be when they scrape you off a sidewalk or pull you down from a rope. then they will have to bury you in an over crowded graveyard, oh yeah I forgot they dont bury suicidals in cemetaries or thats for catholics, but most religions I know of dont bury Suicide deaths in their grave yards, they burry them in a municipal cemetary or in an unmarked grave, now doesnt that suck? you get burried looking like crap, and you get forgotten. However the sucking part doesnt end there, theres still more, it sucks for your father who spent who knows how many minutes porking your mom, just to get her pregnant, then it sucks for your mom who carried you around for 9 months and then had to go through heck, trying to push you clean right out of her vagina, then all those auxillary personel such as doctors, godparents, nurses, who gave up so much hoping this crying squirming thing would be of good use one day, then it sucks for your teachers and friends who expected more from you than just drinking coffee at a funeral. THAT SUCKS AND NOT JUST FOR YOU. sorry for the expression but its true, we all have ups and downs in life, but we all try to find ways to get over them, there are many people who live in a world of ****, but they find ways to make it through their days, So if i were you id find ways to be useful and eventually leave a good legacy behind me, like they say to problems, if you want to solve them there are many ways, if you dont want to there are many reasons, its your shot to call. but life will go on.
