There are no secrets to surfing. Good surfers will all agree that the best thing to do to improve is...SURF. Surf as much as you can in good or bad conditions, small or larger waves, onshore or offshore winds. There is nothing that can simulate surfing other than surfing. You can try pool skating or go to a skate park with bowls and it will give you a feel of going up and down the face but the skate park doesn't shift and change. What makes surfing difficult is the wave always changes and you have different conditions everyday. Here's a website you can learn more about surfing http://www.808surfer.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=adc36dcbc19a22979476e3aa48edface

Also, make sure you have a board with enough float for the waves you surf. For instance, if you surf crappy east coast waves (crappy most of the time), you shouldn't be riding a potato chip. I'd get a fish at the minimum, funboard, or longboard depending on type of wave you surf. http://www.surfboardshack.com/board_design.html

As you progress in skill, you can learn to make those tiny shortboards (ala Kelly Slater and Andy Irons) work in crappy waves. Remember, wave count is important so get something that will allow you to catch a bunch of waves every time you surf.

there are a lot of good answers here but I think the real secret to surfing is water knowledge. The more time you spend in the water (surfing of course, but swimming, fishing and diving count) the more aware of conditions and where to position yourself you are. and the easier it is to get into the waves. If you dive a spot that you are going to surf later in the season, it gives you an idea of how and where the waves are going to be breaking. Fishing from boats in the area will help you figure out line ups and points of reference on the shoreline. Swimming will help you find currents and rips in the water.
All these little things add up and are what make a good waterman. A good waterman is generally a good surfer.

you, its down to you to surf every day, progress and challenge yourself. i think that it is the board and waves you ride that is the secret without them it wouldn't be possible.

Patience and practice is pretty much it. No secrets (except for the super double secret one we can't tell you).
