I thought "The Truth about Cats and Dogs" was a really nice movie that sort of fits your parameters, but I don't really mean to suggest Janeane Garofalo is "ugly", just not conventionally "gorgeous" (though she is at times to me).

Umm Mansfield Park by Jane Austen? I think that's the name of the movie. Older, not black and white or anything but older. She was plain looking I think and liked some guy.

cant remember the name but it was about a really fat girl and the guy only saw her has a beautiful slim girl think it was Gweneth paltrow who starred any way they fell in love it was very funny
