Hi, my family is thinking about getting a german shepherd/husky. But they're planning on getting it a dog house, of course make it nice and warm and after it stops snowing...we're planning on it sleeping outside? And we're going to excersize it and all that....btw how much exercize does it need? And how cold is it too cold for a german shepherd/husky????

I owned one husky/shepherd mix. He was something else. I ended up taking up jogging just to keep him happy. We ran about 3000 miles in his lifetime. We typically ran about 3 miles every other day. Somedays more - somedays less. He loved outdoors - even in winter. You don't mention where you are from. I am in northern Ohio and the winters can be pretty harsh at times. My husky mix never minded the cold. Of course if you live in northern Canada, I'd suggest not keeping him outside all winter. Good luck (oh yeah, get ready for dog hair on your cloths!) :)

With husky in him, even during the dead of winter, he's probably going to want to spend his days outside. Huskies are northern dogs and it's in their genetics to survive outside in the harshest of conditions. German shepherds are quite capable of doing the same altho they didn't originate in the arctic, so he should be fine outside. However, if they're getting him as a puppy, starting him out inside the house is probably a good idea. Puppies aren't developed enough to regulate their body temperature, nor do they have the protective guard hairs to shield them from cold and moisture. I used to have a German shepherd/husky mix named Diesel. Wonderful dog. I got him as a five-week-old puppy in mid-november and kept him inside until he was four months old and had grown his adult fur. After that, he preferred to be outside until it started getting warm. Then he wanted to be inside with me in the A/C. As for excercise...huskies get bored very easily and have A LOT of energy, so if he isn't walked or played with at least once a day, he could become destructive from boredom. But overall, they're very good dogs.

i might say the only element that makes her look something like an Elkhound could be the hues interior the face mixed with the german shepherd physique shape. The face coloring seems very husky like, and her physique is german shepherd all the way

german shepards and huskies alike adapt well to cold weather. i have a shepard hybrid and it seems like he comes alive during the winter. because it is such a large dog it will need a good bit of exercise, best thing is to walk the dog frequently and a good game of fetch is always good. you do need to do some research on social trainging and basic commands because the dogs are very smart and will become warry of people they are not used to.
