In hockey, if you do something that is not fair, they put you in a penalty box (usually for 2 minutes). So, a hockey player has to sit there, while his team has to struggle, because they are down a man on the ice.

Should they do this in NASCAR? If a driver hits another driver (purpose or not) they have to sit in the pit for a few minutes. Do you think this would improve NASCAR? Or is that why people watch NASCAR, just to see what driver is going to hit what driver, and suffer no repercussions?

hockey_gal: You rock. I go to the St. Petersburg Indy car races every year, I always thought that it was not really fair. Hockey has a way of pulling the bad guys, don't cha know.

Well, usually if two cars connect, they either go to pit road or to the garage, depending on the damages. Most often the yellow flag is thrown. However, (again, depending on the amount of damage) sometimes the crew can't get the car in driveable condition before the green flag is thrown. Which means by the time they get back on the track-if they can fix the car-they're usually down at least a lap. I've seen some races where a driver will have to go to the garage and come back 40-some laps down. And then, when drivers are coming off of (or onto) pit road, they have to obey the speed. If they don't, they're sent to the back of the pack.

So in a sense, they are getting penalty minutes, with the car being the ref sending them to the box...or in this case, either pit road or the garage. You have to remember, though, that even though drivers are on teams, they're driving for a win for themselves first, whereas hockey players play as a whole. You don't hear a player say "I won the game", but rather "we won", as opposed to a driver winning the race.

Good thought/question, though.

BTW, it's not a trolling question. It's not like she's saying we're inbred trash because we watch NASCAR (and we've had to hear that a few times, remember?) It's a good, legitimate question.

Well the problem is when a driver does not do anything intentional to cause a wreck. What will end up happening is then everyone will be too scared to race because if they just slightly tap a car that was loose in the corner all of a sudden, and it loses it, now the bumping car would be sat for something that it couldnt avoid.

And if NASCAR knows, and does have proof that someone did intentionally wreck someone, they will be sat for a pre-determined amount of laps. Kyle Petty years back at the Coca-Cola 600 was pentalized 5 laps after causing a massive wreck that took out a good chunk of the field, and was heard on the radio saying that He would "take care of the situation". There have also been other instances where a driver is pentalized laps for an infraction due to rough driving. If you also think about it, NASCAR does also have to watch how it uses the penalty, as it does not want to go nuts with it, and scare the drivers (of course, the Kurt Busch "I wasnt bad enough" incident in Michigan where he tried to cut Jimmy Spencer's tire is an example of how the penalty should of been enforced)

The penalties, even if for a lap, are quite tough enough if you look at the rules. The lucky dog rule states that if you lost a lap due to penalty, you must earn it back by passing the leader, and hoping for the caution, you can not get it back through the lucky dog rule.

No, no, and kind of.

This should not be done in NASCAR because the amount of time it takes to do a lap around each track varies while the amount of time per game in the NHL is the exact same every time.

Also, if another driver is consistently hitting other drivers and has already had other warnings as to calm down and stop hitting other driver, then he should be forced to go down pit road and lose a lap if he persists.

Finally, yes, one of the big reasons as to why people watch NASCAR is because of how people will do the "bump and run" on different drivers. This makes the series much more exciting. BUT, if someone is being stupid and is constantly pushing someone or many other drivers out of the way then yes, he should be punished in some way. (BTW...it is no different in hockey with the fights that happen between different players. That is another reason why people watch the NHL).

They already have a Procedure for Handling this. It can be a Penalty for Over agressive driving. This Penalty can be a Pit Road pass Thru or a Pit Road stop For 1 or More Laps. Plus a trip to the Nascar Trailer and a Chewing out-Monetary Fine-Points Deduction. THE PROBLEM IS--They dont address this Equally or often Enough!!!!

They already have that penalty. If you wreck someone you have to sit while their car is being repaired. I think they have only used it once or twice though. Most of the time they just get held in there pit box for a lap or a predetermined time depending on the infraction.

They do something of that sort,
the pass through penatly, tail end of longest line, and holding in pit penalties are their versions. They have sent drivers to the garage for the rest of the race, and held drivers on pit road for more then a lap.
so in essence they do have penalty minutes.... just in nascar its laps

You're missing a very important point.
This is entertainment. It has to be competitive or it won't be entertaining. The people being entertained, that's you, would lose track of who is on what lap, who is leading and who needs what penalty in order for the race to competitive.
It's great to be a fan and we all need something to cheer about. But none of this is going to change your life. It's entertainment.

There are penalties. For example, if drivers may get held a lap for rough driving. If it is too much, they will get parked for the remainder of the race. However, the majority of wrecks are not done on purpose. Driver's aren't going to ruin their own day to hurt someone else's.
I do wish, however, when driver's have issues through no fault of their own, they could get their spot back like they do in local racing. Wishful thinking though.

They basically do that now except its only for several seconds which is usually enough time to place a car 1 or several laps down making it very difficult to get back on the lead lap. Although it is a very discretional penalty. In other words if Johnny Sauter purposely puts a fender to someone he is usually held for a penalty but if JR or Jeff Gordon do the same thing they continue on. Yes there is some favoritism although I don't believe there is any script written enabling particular drivers to win.

Have a nice evening!

In Nascar... They do quite actually, have a PENALTY BOX.....
Though larger in size, it's refered to as a ''Nascar Trailer'' !!!
If a driver hits another,he also is sent to the box !!! If a driver is sent.... To this box.... too many times,in one season.... They
put you in a bigger box !! This box contains nascar Doctors who remove part of your brain. The part that controls your personality !!!
Oooh S*IT !! HOLD ON !!!!
