I see that there are some that say that the internet is not a good place. I know of one place that is VERY safe and very helpful.

The folks there are honest and will also help out with what books to begin with.
To begin, or to start in witchcraft or wicca, you need the desire to know, and that seems to be what you are doing and have.
Next is to begin reading. Several here have stated that and it is truely the next step. Next search out metaphysical shops in your area. You will find that most of these shops carry books on the subject and have classes and such. This will get you into contact with people of the like mind. Look in the store for a bulliten board.
Are there any natural food stores in your area? You might find a bulliten board there as well. Get involved.
At the site that I listed above, there is a wonderful article in the files section that states what to watch out for and what to look for in a coven or group. It is a very useful article.
Books by Scott Cunningham are VERY useful and helpful when looking for information. He is no longer on this plane with us, but his works and words still hold true to this day. He was a very insightful man. You will be able to tell what you need of his work simply by the title of the book. Trust your instincts.
Meditation on the subject is very helpful and a very useful tool in Witchcraft and Wicca. Again, the site mentioned above will absolutely help you out there. There are again, articles you will find helpful on the subject.
Read your history on the subject that you are finding. You will see that there are many disputes about this. Read them all. It will help you to get a feel for the community at large.
Stay away from know-it-alls! In the craft, there is no such a thing as knowing it all. These people are closed minded and usually not very helpful.
When first entering and finding out about Witchcraft and Wicca, you will want to draw positive people, helpful and open people to you. These people will help you find your way. If anything does not FEEL right, then move on. Stay grounded.
Hope that this little bit is helpful.

Well, I to am new to wicca-When I first became interest in wicca of course on line was the first source I went to - and you will find that there are web sites out there with good things to offer( common since) whether this is good or a bunch of garbage-I also read alot, there is a great varity of book stores that have an occult section or you can start an on-line wicca book club where you and friends can find different books and discuss the pros and cons-You will find what you are looking for simply by the law of attractions, if you desire more info-it will come to you.
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY.
BLESSED BE,
ANJI

First, you should find out waht witchcraft and Wicca are, because they are nowhere close to the same thing. Second, you need to study, study, study. For that, I would say avoid the Internet. 95% of info on Wicca and witchcraft online is garbage. If you're looking for free, go to the library, although your choices will be limited. If you're serious about studying on your own, you're going to have to eventually invest in some books.
My recommendations for beginners:
Wicca for beginners by Thea Sabin
Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner and Living Wicca by Scott Cunningham
Elements of Ritual by Deborah Lipp
More suggestions of mine can be found here:

If you can only find the history online then you're not looking hard enough - there are tons of sites and bunches of books out there.
http://www.witchvox.com is a place to start.
Also, "witchcraft" is a practice. "Wicca" is a religion that includes beliefs in Deity, as well as rituals and observances. If you're just looking for "k3wl powrz" then don't bother looking at Wicca.

First, ignore the smart alecks and those saying you're going to hell.
Go to www.witchvox.com and look for recommendations on good books and hit Amazon.com used. I would start with Wicca, a guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham and go from there.
Others here will have some good links as well.
Added: what is with the hateful answers today? Give it a rest and don't answer if you think witchcraft and/or Wicca is dumb, damnation or whatever.

"Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham is a very good book for getting started on the Wiccan path. (Please keep in mind that Wicca and witchcraft are NOT necessarily the same thing, and that witchcraft is not the focus of Wicca. Wicca is about honoring and adoring the Goddess and Her beloved Consort, the God, and keeping Their holy days.)
Stay far away from anything by Silver Ravenwolf.
You might find this website helpful:

And you can find other Pagans in your area through the Witches of the World section at Witchvox:

Well, the history is a very important part, so don't just shove that off to the side!
www.witchvox.com is a good place to start.
As far as books, if you're going to be a solitary, I'd recommend "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham. Anything by Raymond Buckland is pretty good too.

find books and read. Make sure that this is what you want. Study hard before you make a final decision. I think it was the best decision I ever made, but it could be different for you. Laurie Cabot is good and so is Scott Cunningham. Try those too, try to avoid Silver Ravenwolf, i find her to be a little too far out there.

There should be on-line forums for Wiccans. Do a google search of "Wiccan forums" and join one. Depending on where you live, you may even find a local coven to hang out with. (Ask around on the Wiccan forums, look in the phone directory.)
P.S. To others: Wiccans are not Satan-worshippers!!!! They're perfectly nice people!

It won't get you into many good things...
In the end you've only wasted a lot of time.
I would urge you not to do it, but even God has mercy on people allowing them to do what they want (see the story of the lost son).
I decided I would go to a church, and learn the power of prayer instead of wicca.
Prayer and God is a lot better.
If you're interested in the supernatural, better stick with the good side... It is better for your concience.
