I work at the front desk of a hotel full time, from 7 AM to 3 PM. Sometimes I have another employee with me, so if I am feeling sick, I can go sit down or run to the bathroom (eek! it happens!). This coming week though I am scheduled to be alone for most of my shift everyday (it's finals week and most of my fellow employees will be studying).
The rules at my job are pretty strict. I can never leave the front desk un-manned, I am not allowed to have a chair at the front desk to sit down. If I need to nibble on some crackers or dry cereal, I have to sneak to the back office for moments at a time. When the phone rings, I HAVE to answer it within 3 rings.
I don't mean to be whiney... but my morning sickness has gotten bad again this week and I am really nervous about how I will be able to deal with it at work. I keep getting the image of being alone and having to run back to a trash can to throw up, with customers hearing everything in a line at the front desk. Any advice?

Speak to the front office manager about your morning sickness, explain that it is not something which you can control, and that you need to nibble on the crackers to keep your stomach somewhat settled. See if he/she will allow an exception of a stool for you to sit on, if you feel as if you need to. If they are not understanding, speak to HR...

I'm not pregnant, but I have a really sensitive stomach. When I've been in similar work circumstances, I've had really good luck sucking on ginger-flavored Altoids. Ginger settles your stomach naturally, and a little piece of candy is much less notieceable than a big mouth full of cracker crumbs.

Good luck.

Speak to your manager and be honest about the situation. You may need another post to work at for a couple of months. It's discrimination if you get fired over this. I'm sure everything will be fine though if you're just honest.

I don't have any real work advice, especially if you haven't told your manager about your pregnancy, but my morning-sickness advice is, don't take a pre-natal vitamin in the morning! Those things are deadly!

Good luck, I found the morning sickness went away soon enough...then comes the heartburn...
