My husband is in the Coast Guard and I can tell you that, even though he might argue the point with me, my husband is a hero. A real life, honest to goodness hero. How many people can say that about what they do each day?
Coasties protect our shores from the importation of drugs. How many lives are saved each year by keeping the drugs that the Coast Guard men and women risk their lives to intercept off the streets? People running these drugs don't give them up with a smile and a wave.
Next, they put their lives on the line to rescue people in trouble on the water. My husband got recalled to his ship on Thanksgiving Day to go out to sea and rescue a man that was stranded adrift on the ocean and was refusing to leave his yatch. He pulled women and children out of the water that were floating on garbage trying to make it to U.S. boarders to seek asylum. A ship with 40 grown men and women aboard kept a stock of diapers and disposable bottles on board for just this purpose.
They protect our environment. They police the fishing industry by making sure that fish populations aren't wiped out by over harvesting.
I could go on and on. Let me close by saying that after September 11th. My husband was in New York Harbor searching and securing container ships to make sure that we wouldn't be kicked while we were down.

interesting question . i think the coast guard has an excellent reputation. i am not aware of any scandals/corruption. maybe they do better PR work LOL ? as far as I know, coast guard , protects the waters and people at sea. they do search and rescue operations. help keep us safe from people and things we do not want to reach our borders.

One would think that serving your country in a vital effort to protect the nation from terrorists and other illegals, drugs, WMDs and other contraband would be the main thing.
