Tough question. I'm not surprised you haven't got a lot of answers yet.
All I can say is you're right about loving being the most important thing as Christians, and that some fundamentalists take the easy way of "converting the nations" instead of loving God and others the way Jesus told us to.
But what does that love look like? In 500 words or less? :)
All I can say is in my life the basis of Christian love is respect for the other person. That's the bottom line, the first step. If you don't see the person as a human being, your brother in Christ, and love him as he is, instead of just seeing him as an ignorant sinner who has to follow YOUR shining example or he'll rot in hell, if you don't respect him -- then you don't really love him.
And if you don't really love him, you'll never get him to understand what God is. If you try to convert people you don't love as your brothers in Christ, all you will end up doing is pushing them farther away from God than they were to begin with.
*whew* At least that's under 500 words.

John 13:34
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Very difficult to do at all times, but this is a verse that I try to live by everyday.

To care enough to speak TRUTH to them and not pat them on the back and tell them all is well when we know in our hearts that they are on their way to hell.
We have to really care about their well being.
