Just wondering because when I was watching Andy Griffith earlier, it looked kind of like the Pagan Pentogram. Anyone know?

***Ok, so if the badge doesn't look like it did 40 years ago I still want to know what the star means! Thanks!

The star as a badge originates in heraldry, when a star indicated that the wearer had the rank of Knight.

Nothing. The tradition dates back to the old west when the sheriff wore a 5 point star. Some modern day badges have 6 stars. There is no meaning per point.

Contrary to what you appear to believe, there is not and never has been a single standard design for badges. The badge used on a TV show may never have been the actual design used by ANY department. Even if we assume a star has ANY meaning, it could easily be different in different departments.

The US Navy law enforcement community has an oval shaped badge with a star in the middle. It is simply a symbol of authority as previously stated. As a deputy sheriff in Florida, we wear a 5 pointed star on our uniform, it to is a symbol of authority that dates back over 100 years in our county. As for the TV show, it is just that, a TV show!

Well, sheriff's department they have the seven point star, like someone mention, each point mean/stands for something, like knowledge, courtesy, professionalism etc. Most police badge are shield like.

There are different shapes. Some are "shield" shaped, some 5 point star, some 6 points. They are just a recognizable symbol of a police officer.

Uuuuhhhhhhh yeah.................tv badges, especially shows from 40+ years ago are not exactly known for accuracy or showing what is real.

Without seeing this TV badge, I could not tell you but we didn't have any star, pentagram or otherwise, on our badges. The Sheriff's Dept I worked for had a 7 point star shaped badge, but it looked nothing like a pentagram.

Simply adopted as a symbol of authority. Most all of them have 5 points.
