I'm going to begin weaning, 4 week old Chihuahua puppies. Does anyone have any good puppy gruel recipies that they can recommend? If using milk replacer, what is the best milk replacer to buy?

This is especially for you SWINE!!! For you, who think I should have known this, before I bred my dogs, I did know this! I am also, no puppymiller or backyard breeder! You know nothing about me, and I don't appreciate the insults! I probably know more about Chihuahuas, than you ever will! These puppies were never intended to be sold, they are mine and my families! They were wanted even before they were conceived. They will be well taken care of, properly provided for, and very loved! The only reason I even asked this question, was to see if I could improve the puppy gruel that I have already started weaning them on. My female has already been Spayed and my male has already been Neutered., so there will be no more puppies! Since you know so much, you know that because Chihuahuas are so small, and can become hypoglycemic quickly, that you need to pay extra attention to what they eat, and how often the should eat, which you obviously know nothing about. Stop thinking you know it all!!!

For all of you others, I Thank You!!! You all have great answers, and have given me lot's of ideas! The information I was looking for! I appreciate your kindness, and answering the question I asked! Have a great night!!!

Easiest recipe, a high quality all stages food (Canidae is one) mixed with water.

In a bowl of food add enough water to cover to the food. Let it soak until all the water is absorbed. Mash up the dog food. If needed add more water to make it "creamier". At first you want a consistency of thick oatmeal. Over the next few weeks gradually reduce the amount of water you add to the food until the pups are eating either slightly moistened kibble or dry kibble.

No need for milk replacer, they'll still be nursing from at this age.

Well here is my non-smart a** answer like the rest of the panel....
For them being so little, probably still less than a lb., This is what I do for the Bulldog pups)
Put puppy food in the blender and get it all ground up, then use Esbiliac (puppy milk replacer) to soak the food to make it a creamy mixture.. As little as they are they stil need extra nutrition so I would not use plain water yet. Then mix it to your desire if you want it a little more thick use less milk..
I would stick with puppy food for yours only because they are a small breed. Nutro puppy or Royal Canin worked well for my hogs. As you do this for a couple weeks and when they are about 6 wks you can start to just give them the small kibbles soaked so they can just eat that and you can just soak that with water..
Hope this advice helps, and please dont be like me and hand fed them off their own baby spoons, I kept 3 Bulldog puppies out of my litter and now every time they see you with a spoon and bowl they still think it is always for them!!!!!
good luck on your next step which is potty training...lol

Pour warm water over some of the Canidae.

They can eat canned too.

Milk (of any kind) isn't necessary. They are still nursing off mama and getting all they need.
AND
You are trying to get them OFF milk. It doesn't make any sense to give it to them (unless you are milking your dog, it's not the same, and they have to get used to it just like the kibble) then wean them off it.

***NOTE***
Their tummies aren't used to anything but milk, so expect some diarrhea, and maybe even vomiting at first.

***NOTE***
Cows milk isn't good for puppies. That includes yogurt and cottage cheese.
Use PMR (Puppy Milk Replacer, available at petstores) or just water.

Personally I take the puppy food and let itt sit in water until it is moist. Then I mix is with some cottage cheese and plain yogurt. At first put in some extra water so it is almost liquid. I use the cottage cheese because dairy taste seems to make them like it better. I put in the yogurt to get more "good" bacteria into their system. As they get used to it add less add less water, cottage cheese and yogurt until they are eating dry food. However make sure that they have a bowl of water.

Weaning pups can be good photo opportunities! and lots of fun. I wean mine by letting them watch Mom eat first then adding warmed Esbilac Goats milk to soften the food. They loved it.
