Everything Jesus preached was in reference to heaven, this is, was and always has been the "promised land".
The things of the world (wealth, fame, glory, honor, etc) are given by Satan. This is why Jesus told us not to concern ourselves about, the things of the world.
Within the 3 temptations of Jesus the Christ, this is shown.
And the devil took Jesus to a high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them, and said,
"For they have been delivered unto me, and I give them to whosoever I will, I give them, If you will worship me."
Jesus did not deny that the devil was the prince of this world, Jesus told the truth, "it is written that thou shall worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shall thou worship.
Moses was also tempted in the same way Jesus was, but Moses wanted the "promised land" and thought that it was here on earth. Therefore Moses lifted up (worshiped) the serpent in the wilderness, so he would be given the false land, but Satan just wanted Moses and the Jews to sin by killing, thinking it was God the Father commandment.
For Jesus said, "Moses gave you not that bread (words) from heaven, but My Father giveth you the TRUE bread from heaven.

It related to life on earth - but latter interpreters try and give 'an after life/death' for us for their own benefits and due to ignorance.
No-one has come after death and informed us what happens after death.
People in power and position give interpretations and answers to suit the times, ages, the situations of the time and place and just to pretend that they know the all answers.

Both but in this life we have to take up our cross and follow Him and drink of the cup of suffering that he drank.
