They can live longer, although like everyone says, the breed itself with all the breathing problems they can have could lessen those yrs. I had to put my Bonnie to sleep because she had cancer in her lungs and she was 10. I have 5 other ones now, my oldest girl turned 9 in Aug and still flies around here like she is 2.
I always think "mine' should live forever as they are exactly like kids to me.

the average life span for a Bulldog is about 8 to 10 years. We know some bulldogs that have made it to 12

That's about right - though the rare bulldog can live to about 12.

Nearly 50% of English bulldogs have hip dysplasia according to OFA and I'm sure their elbows are pretty awful too. Due to a collapsed muscle in their airway and their very short snouts, they tend to have awful breathing problems. Real bulldogs, like American bulldogs or American pit bull terriers, typically live into their teens if well cared for.

Yes.

Everything that makes them bull dogs, their wrinkled faces, their barrel chests, stocky bodies, the way their legs look, are all the result of in-breeding.

In-breeding (to the extent bulldogs suffer), in and of itself causes shorter lives. Also, the wrinkled faces cause breathing problems. The stocky bodies cause organ problems. They have problems with their joints, spines, eyes, and a host of other problems. It all adds up to shorter life spans.

Like I said in my other post:
We know dogs don't live nearly as long as we want them to. You knew that when you got him, before you knew about his (POTENTIALLY) shorter life span. It's no different.

ENJOY EVERY DAY!

Don't borrow trouble.

English bulldogs? They're the right size to live in to their teens, but given their awful conformation and lack of ability to breathe properly I shouldn't think many make it to ten. I haven't met that many, but I don't think I've ever met any as old as ten. American bulldog types can probably make it into their teens.

No they can live a lot longer than 8 years. This rumour started when Bulldogs were the ultimate choice in dog fighting and the champion dog ould only serve its purpose until it was 8 then it ould be used for other dogs to train on resulting in death. Not nice at all and need i say illegal.
