which one is better quality? the Fender, or the Silvertone?

NOTE:
my best friend is LEFT handed. THE FENDER IS A LEFT-HANDED GUITAR. THE SILVERTONE PACKAGE IS RIGHT-HANDED.

I'm assuming you friend doesn't play guitar yet?

First, the comparison you are making with those guitars isn't really good. The fender is a higher level guitar. The silvertone is a low end beginner guitar. It's like comparing a sedan to a compact car.

Squire is Fender's low end version. Look for squire starter packs. They will be about the same price.

You should try to find out what kind of guitar your friend wants if you aren't sure. Some people prefer an SG or les paul body style over the strat style you have there.

Wow. What a friend are you! The best thing to do is to go to your local music shop and see what packages are available. Get an assistant to show you a few. See what is in your price range. Then take your friend along and invite him/her to choose from the ones you've chosen. It takes away the surprise, but it ensures that the friend likes the gift. Yes , you will need an amp, but you can get a Fender Squier package for a good price. One thing. I'm left handed, but I play the regular way round. I think it's easier, cos All my strength is in my fingering hand. Unless he/she has started already, I'd really recomend your friend palys that way round. Hope this helps

Also, check out the Gibson and Ibanez guitars too.
Gibson has the Melody Maker Les Paul guitars for $250.
Both Gibson and Fender are high quality guitars too.
Ibanez has great starter guitar packages too.

I don't know anything about guitars but I came across your post while looking for info on what to buy my 10yr old son.
I had a look at the links you provided & noticed the prices you quoted are US dollars & the sites are in the US. The 230USD is approx 270AUD + freight, 140USD = 165AUD + freight. Allow 2 weeks for it to arrive & also check the amp, etc are suitable for Aust power, etc
