little of both. they do grow naturally, but y0ou have to help it along (like the top post so rudely said). if you dont regularly seperate the dreads, you will end up with a huge matt. if you seperate the dreads, you should be able to skin, not hair.

most people think that b/c their coat is naturally like this that they dont require any grooming, but that is false. they require just as much upkeep as a poodle. they also tend to stink b./c the dreads pack in all sorts of smells, so bathing is a must

The coat on the Puli naturally tends to matt. Cording is basically controled matting. If you are planning on cording a Puli you normally start around 6 months when the adult coat starts to come in. It is a giving time consuming process lettign the coat start to matt and splitting them into cords. A full length corded coat takes a couple of years to grow. When washing the dog great care must be taken to individually wash the cords, then you must blow dry all of the cords until the coat is totally dry or your dog can mildew....I know it happened to my girlfriend's nationally ranked female (Kissee) once when she didn't her totally dry. Believe me when I say that getting midlew out of a dogs coat is not easy.

Most pet owners keep there pets in a fair short clip and brushed out. Sort of like a poodle the body on a poodle in a puppy cut.

puli and komodor both have the dreaded hair it naturally grows that way The coat can be brushed out until it is straight if the owner does not wish for it to have the cord like or "dreadlock" look.

Some require a little help to cord, but it should want to do that naturally.
We had a Puli years ago, and his needed a little help to get started and then was just fine.

It cords naturally, the owners/groomers just smooth the cords down and keep them a uniform size. If the coat fails to cord by a certain age the dog cannot be shown.
