There is no proof that praying serves God but there are evidences that praying serves the person doing it. You don't even have to pray God to see the benefit of it; recent surveys show that a spiritual life is beneficial to most people. Time Magazine even had a cover story about it.

God is not served by being prayed to. We humans are the ones who need prayer. He wants communication from us but he doesn't need it. I think that He feels about us sort of the way we feel about our children.

Job 9:23 (NIV) When a scourge brings sudden death, God mocks the despair of the innocent.
Job 9:17 (NIV) He would crush me with a storm and multiply my wounds for no reason.
Proverbs 1:26-28 (NIV) I* (God) in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you - when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
Jeremiah 11: 14 "Do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their distress.
Malachi 1:4 (NIV) Edom may say, "Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins." But this is what the LORD Almighty says: "They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the LORD.
Psalm 88 –(NIV)
13 But I cry to YOU for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before YOU.
14 Why, O LORD, do YOU reject me and hide your face from me?
15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair.
16 YOUR wrath has swept over me; YOUR terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.
18 YOU have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.

Pray helps the person praying if they believe that some mythical being is listening. If they don't then it is a waste of time as there actually nobody listening

Well, when you pray, you talk to God, and he will talk to you. He'll give you the wisdom and knowledge you need to save his people. And through prayer, u ask for forgiveness of sins and to become a better person. You also have the chance to thank him.

I'm not sure He is. Prayer is communication. Worship creates interest in others, so that they might learn of God and His Plan, and thereby be saved. God isn't looking to be served, He's looking to save as many as possble.

He isn't. It puts the pray-er in tune with God.

I think it's more for man's benefit. If you take Christianity's view of God he is perfection therefore why should he benefit from the prayers of a mortal?

You are serving God by giving him your time and talking with him. You are going to him and spending time with him.

My brother let it be clear that man exists because He wills without His will nothing can exist. Therefore the man is in need of God and not vice versa. By offering prayers to God you are expressing your servitude and seeking his bounties. God is not in need of our prayers but we express our "shukr" (thanks for His blessings). It is his command that we should continue to be grateful to Him and remember Him as often we can. Allah is very merciful. He acknowledges man's prayers and award him in this world and in the life hereafter. This is His promise. Thus the man serves the God as His humble servant by obeying His commandments. Man will do disservice to himself if he does not obey God.
