Accepting Christ and allowing the holy spirit in. In the time of Pentecost, the disciples had the holy spirit resting upon them as tounges of fire. For an example.
Also before the time of Christ, God would make his presence known in a more real way. God abided with King David for he had a heart after his own for an example.

According to the Bible:
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 15:4-7 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
First we must be born again. After we are God's child, according to these verses, we must abide in HIM for him to abide in us. What does that mean? I believe for us to abide in Him simply means we need to not depart from our God. Don't leave Him. As he does not abide with sin, we lose His presence if we are not "walking" with God. If we go our own way, either in deed or spirit, God will not abide with us. This does not mean we lose our salvation as we are promised we cannot. It means that we have a lack of His presence and power in our lives. (verse 4)

First you must be a Believer.
He must be your Savior.
Then you tell Him your needs through prayer.
He will abide within you and be your helper.
He speaks to us thru His words in the Bible, so read
your Bible often.
Trust and obey.

no one can get closer to the Lord than at the Lord's supper. In the catholic faith, we beleive Jesus's words in Jn. cp 6, we take them literally to mean the bread that he gives is living bread, meaning Jesus himself, when you take communion this is him abiding in those who receive him.

ask him. "ask and you will be given, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened" believe his word, proclaim him Lord of your life, say that Jesus is god, and that you believe that He is the only way to be saved. "confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and you shall be saved" accept what he did for YOU on the cross.

Trust Him.
God made statements! We are supposed to trust Him when He says something.
He said that He sent His Son, that means He sent His Son. He said that if you trust in Him, you will have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you. He also said that if you trust in Him, that you will dwell safely in the land.
