I've had a great experience on eBay, both buying and selling. I've only had one seller rip me off, and have gotten some terrific bargains. I bought 100 X-Acto blades for about 1/2 what they would have cost where I work, even with my discount....some great old movies and audiobooks that are no longer current, and art supplies.
I sold enough in collectible figurines in one month to buy a top of the line Dell computer, plus pay my rent and utilities. I never could have made that kind of money in a local sale.
So, yes...I think eBay is worth it. You have to be careful, and use common sense, but it offers a unique opportunity for buying and selling. And so far, you aren't taxed on what you make from it.

As far as cars on eBay, there are increasingly more dealers on there and they do not use eBay to sell cars but more like a advertising venue. If you can wade through all of the over-priced dealer listings and find the For Sale By Owner listings, you will find some good deals and the seller is getting a good deal too because they can sell above trade in value.
Soon eBay is going to have a way that you can sort by For Sale By Owner, Dealers or both so it will be easier.

I sell on ebay full-time, with two ebay stores. I don't deal with cars, but I save people a lot of money, and still make a decent living. Just depends on what you're looking for. Some things are great deals, and others aren't. My friend needed a part for his car. He was about to go pay $170 at an auto parts store, but I checked on ebay first. Got a used part for $17 including shipping, and it works fine. There are deals to be found, just have to look for them.....

everything you buy seems to be what the item would cost at a regular store. and to sell something on ebay it costs you about 5 or 6 dollars per hundred dollars youre item is worth. cyberspace is unlimited and these billionaire clowns are charging to put up an ad..... paypal is just as bad, they make billions and charge you for every little thing. take care of you! some of the items on ebay are hard to find, so once in a while there is a good find.

Yes, they are worth it - to the people who bought them. Otherwise they would not have bought them.
But that does not mean they are worth it to you. Value is in the eye of the beholder - so only you can tell what anything is worth to you.

It depends. People sell junk on eBay just like anywhere else. If you're reasonably intelligent and can discern if a deal sounds too good to be true, then you'll probably be okay.
