When is a child old enough to get a spanking? And by spanking i mean one or two pats on the bottom. Not really hard, just to let them know not to do whatever they did again. Thanks in advance!

Thats not called a spank 1-2 swats to get their attention. A spanking is anywhere from 10-20 swats on the bottom, usually over the knee. I think the age of spanking depends on the maturity of the child and where they are at in regards to developing a way too communicate. My answer the youngest would be somewhere between the child being 3-4.

When they are old enough to know better they are old enough to get a swat on the butt.
It can also be used to teach... If your 2 year old throws something at you or someone else for instance and you spank them they will learn, "Damn... throwing things at people hurts me! Maybe I shouldn't do that again!"
Spanking a kid does not make them violent! Good Lord! All of our parents were spanked... all of their parents were spanked... and so on for hundreds of years. Only in this generation did we come up with a concept as cheesy as, "The time-out". The problem today isn't that kids get spanked, it's that they don't. I remember when I was about 5 I was at the store with my dad and asked if I could get a toy. He said, "No." I started screaming and pitching a fit and promptly recieved a swift backhand. I didn't pitch a fit in a store ever again.
Kids test the limits of their parents until they are met with firm discipline. Meet them early and avoid the problems that will come later.

Never? Oh jeez.. that's ridiculous. Sometimes time-outs and "talking" DO NOT work with children! I think when your child starts understanding right from wrong would be when you can "spank". Just a swat on the behind to let them know. It depends on how your child is developing as well. But I think around 3 or 4 would be an appropriate age.

When they start ignoring you and keep doing whatever it is you told them not to. This usually happens when they start walking.
Edit: There's nothing wrong with spanking when needed. If you start when they are quite little, you'll only have to do it a handful of times as they grow up.
Also, you won't see an Amish, Mennonite, or Hutterite child pitching a fit in a store. Why? Because they know what's waiting for them. Not so with nonspanked kids.

When they are old enough to UNDERSTAND what you are saying. Around 2. But little taps on the butt and not full on spanking should work at that age cause they care what you think of them. Just be sure to give them a nasty face when you do it. It will break their heart.

When my daughter started to walk is when I started swating her hands. When that stops working then I will move up the food chain to a swat and the backside then up to the switch.

I think around three. By then they should start to know the difference between right and wrong.

I don't believe in spanking. I think kids should understand what they did wrong and learn how to deal with those kinds of situations, not be scared that if they do whatever it is they did again they'll be hit. I just don't think it a good lesson to teach.

I usually believe in waiting until they are at least 4 because by then they really know right from wrong, any younger and I think it is a bit unfair.
