and I don't activate the card I received in the mail will it still show up on my credit report as a card I have?

Yes it will. Once you have the card and the credit check has been conducted you are locked. If you cancel it too soon it will actually reduce your score. Just put the card in a drawer for a little while and don't use it. If you keep it for an extended period of time it will actually help to raise your credit score.

You need to send a letter to the credit card company telling them that you wish to cancel the card. Just applying for the credit card will show up in your credit score.

call and cancel the card. Don't obsess with the I love debt score. You have to borrow money and make payments on time to get a high score. You have to keep borrowing money and keep making payments on time to keep a high score. All you get is debt.

Pay as you go and live on less than you make and you will have money. If you have money. you don't need to borrow money. If you don't need to borrow money. You don't have to worship at the alter of the almighty fico score.

The only thing a high score is good for is borrowing money.

Of course the bankers and their loyal followers are gonna tell you different.

Debt free is the way to live.
