Ok, i found a female dog whos obviously just had puppies. She has HUGE teats. The dog is extremely skinny, all its ribs are showing, its spine, and hip bones!!! :( The dog also shows signs that someones been fighting her. She has scares all over her face and legs. She has been very friendly to me...not violent at all.

My question what do i do now??? I dont know where her puppies are!! If i did i would take them in. Who do i call for the dog? We have a humane socitey in my city but no "Animal Cops" like you see on tv.

I have 2 dogs of my own and i dont want to put her in the backyard with my dogs.....incase shes still feeding the puppies somewhere.....What should i do!?!?

Alex: No dog should EVER be skinny enough to see bones. A dog whos just had puppies should be twice its normal weight.

I had the same situation with a cat a few months ago. Found her right outside, just given birth, and no babies in sight.

My suggestion is to feed and water her, get some treats together, and walk outside with her, off leash, and wait. I had to do the same thing and as frustrating of an evening it was she eventually had to go back to babies. She kept trying to lead me away but it was no use and soon enough led me to them. I took them in, and after about 9 weeks got everyone adopted out, spayed mom, and then adopted her out.

Just wait with her outside, it may take awhile especially if the babies are a little older, but just be patient and don't interrupt her because then she'll take longer to trust leading you to her babies.

Good luck, and don't take those poor babies in anywhere, there are plenty of families willing to take a litter of pups and moms to foster. Most times a dog that even looks like it was a fighting dog is just disregarded and put to sleep.

*Edit* Also, it's possible for a dog to do into heat as soon as 72 hrs after birth, not always but possible, so once you do find those puppies get her off the street. She can't be spayed until she is finished nursing but at least she can't get pregnant again either.

You don't really need animal cops, or police for that matter. What you can do, is spend time with her. Pet her, feed her, and talk to her. That will allow you to gain her trust. If she still has puppies, she will start bringing them around. They could be in a den, or she could have just weened them. Or she could have been dumped after they were born. All of those are very likely scenarios.

I rescued a pit bull that was dumped near my ranch. When I first saw Tank, he was an emaciated puppy, with bite wounds fresh and healed, all over his tiny body. This poor guy was so desperate for food, he was trying to dig for something to eat in my yard.

Well I snatched this tiny guy up and took him to the vet. I don't usually do that, but there was something special about him. Besides, the bites on his elbow were so infected, that he would have been, at the very least, crippled for life without treatment.

Well after a few months of TLC, he climbed out of his shell, and I finally got to see, the amazing dog he was all along. I will never understand why anyone would want to hurt my Tank, or any dog for that matter. He's incredibly loving and affectionate. He's the most well behaved dog I've ever owned. I'm just glad I found him as a puppy. Thank goodness he didn't have to go through years of hell.

Thank you for caring about a pit bull. Most people look the other way because they think their pure evil. I'll never regret opening my heart and home to my pit bull. I know he should be the one that's thankful, but I'm the one who feels lucky to have him.

Best thing you can do is spend time with her, feed her, and earn her trust. Stay vigilant for the puppies, but be aware that they might be with the people that dumped her.

Also, fighting dogs rarely escape their owners. These dogs are worth a lot of money, so dog-men don't leave any room for error. If a fighting dog is seen on the streets, they've more than likely, been dumped.

Pit bulls need human companionship. When they've been abused, and finally find a gentle hand, they typically won't leave the area. So if you start caring for her outside, she may not run off.

It depends on what you want to do with the dog. If you want her to go to the shelter, call the humane society. If you want to wait until you can tell whether or not she has pups, then just do what I wrote in the beginning. Either way, thanks for doing something.

Here's my gorgeous guy today.

This is one of his poor elbows, that will be scared forever.

You are in a pickle.
See if she will "show" you where the pups are. They may be dead. You can continue to provide her food and eventually they will accompany her to your house. But this dog cannot be considered safe and need special care.
You are a good man to take care for her. Keep her away from your dogs as she may have a disease or try to protect her puppies or guard her food. Find a rescue group fast. Caring for her and her pups can turn expensive fast. If you take her to a kill shelter, she and the puppies will most likely be put down, especially this time of year. Shelters overflow around Christmas. But that should not keep you from sending her. Your priority must be the health of your own pets and the safety of children in the neighborhood.

Look around where you found the mom for her pups, she probably wouldn't have wondered to far if they are still alive. If you are able to find the puppies I would recommend taking them straight to a vet explain that you found them and if you don't' have alot of money to spend on them let them know I am sure they will work with you , tell them that you didn't think that they would survive without immediate attention. Continue feeding the mother dog maybe something more nutritious like chicken and rice. I wouldn't take them to a shelter just yet. they may just get put down because of the condition that they are in, it may take alot of money to get them in the proper condition. If you can afford it and want to you could just forget about the shelter altogether and find them homes on your own so you know that they don't get put to sleep and do get adopted.

LOOK FOR THE PUPPIES, BRING FOOD, TAKE THE MOM WITH YOU, THEY WILL BE ATTRACTED TO HER. be careful when you touch the puppies, she may be possesive,
Feed her as much as she can drink and eat, make her a nice place to put her and if you find them, her puppies, make sure it is comfterable and warm, make sure the puppies can't fall out or they might die. Tomorrow you should call the humane society, she is probably in alot of drama. Tell them anbout the puppies aswell, even if you fund them. If you think you found all the puppies look gain, there is probably more. The reson I think she might be hurt is because she might have lived in a puppy mill. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CARE OF HER AND DON'T LET YOUR DOGS NEAR HER!!!

Ther ARE breeds in which the ribs, spine & hip bones should be visiable. That being said it may not means SHE should be showing bones - it could be she couldn't keep up with a large litters milk needs & keep wieght - or you could be right she's abused.
Options: call the humane society
advertise in paper "found dog"
just quietly take her in & feed her.
the most likely senerio is the puppies are with her former owner & in no danger (or at least not more than she was)

Call pet/animal control to see where they transport animals. Also ask if they kill the animals in the shelter. Ask a few times cause they can lie to try to sell dogs.
Dont bring the mother to a kill shelter. Make sure they are honest in answering you.
Feed her and give her clean water. Yes, she hasnt eaten, and possibly dehyrated. If you feel she need an extra boost in nutrition, give her brewer's yeast from the health food store.
Blessing to you that you are taking care of her.
You would need to keep her away from males if she becomes in heat again. I think a female dog becomes in heat twice a year.

ok, heres what you should do.
Since she seems to like and trust you, try to put a leash on her and ask her to show you her puppys. who knows maybe she will know what ur saying. if that doesent work, then here is option 2:

leave her for a few days where she is, and come by EVERY day with lots of food and water and just stay with her for like and hour, maybe the puppys will come to her to get fed and then u can take them home. if this works then call ur local vet and tell her whats going on/what happned and get an opiontment ASAP.

I hope that this helps.
And good luck. i hope that this poor dog will be ok along with her puppys.

Some people use them to have puppies i.e. Puppy mills.,
and these kinda breeder just use them make their money and throw the mom away , best is to go to humane society tell them where u found her and they will take care of and and set her up for adoption .,

Oh boy! There go my heart strings......Take her to a vet...

Sorry about her pups, BUT, I just couldn't get rid of this dog.
Personally, I would HAVE to keep her.

She found me and I couldn't let her go.
I would observe her a few days. I sure hope her "master" didn't get rid of her because of the pups.
You could put up flyers around town, and hope someone claims her.

Tough call!
