I like driving a small sedan (Honda Civic) because easy to park, easy to turn, low cost to maintain. I have been driving automatic transmission now for decades.
Sometimes in a distant city I need to rent a car.
I am no longer able to drive stick shift.
My reflexes are attuned to the smaller car ... I have a real hard time how much space to allow for cornering, what's needed for turning, backing up etc.
For a new driver, I think a mid sized car is probably better for long term driving skills. Your son can go with a more compact car once he has picked up the basic skills.
You might also look at the insurance costs. There are reasons why some cars have big differences in rates. Some are due to peer pressure on kids if they are in sporty cars.
Some are due to certain models being targets of car thieves.
But some are due to safety statistics.
Your insurance agent can advise you on which cars are safest for new drivers, and how come that is.

That is probably too much vehicle for a beginner, and it is truly inexperience, along with the feeling of invincability most teens have, the leads to the high accident and death statistics.

Small cars are more proned to geting overturned by 18 wheelers. Also a truck fits more of a man than a car unless the car is a BMW,Benz,Lexus,Rolls Royce, Bentley, etc.

Larger vehicles TEND to have more BLIND SPOTS.
Get him a blind spot mirror and adhere it to the regular mirror especially on the RIGHT.
BUT most important is to MAKE sure he knows how to SCAN and TURN his head when lane changing and making right turns.
