Honestly It doesn't matter, However I used to have 2 ps2's I left one always flat and one standing up due to how they fit in what stand they were in. Both of them were pretty much played equally and I bought them both at the same time the year it was released. Approx 6 Months ago the one that was standing on it's end did break down. It could just be coincidence but I would stick with laying it flat down if you can. They both lasted so long so far though that at this point I don't think it really matters. I mean the one standing up was knocked down a couple times on accident which more then likely contributed. If you can keep it safe and with enough airflow it shouldn't matter. I know thats not a ps3 but i dont think anyone has had one long enough to have them both sitting there to break down.

Yes the PS3 can be put in a vertical position, but I wouldn't recommend it because if you have any pets or young children in your house, it can easily get knocked over. I always keep my PS3 flat.
