I have three accounts on my credit report that I didn't open. Two are delinquent. One is current. We have no knowledge at all of these accounts at all. We reported to Experian and placed a fraud alert on our account. They emailed back that these would stay on our credit report, that they were verified. That is not possible they do not belong to us. What do we do now??? Thanks in advance for any information.

Have fraud alerts also placed with Equifax and TransUnion....Pull your credit reports from all three credit bureaus to make sure you are fully aware of the scope of the identity theft and how many accounts have been opened under your name. The credit reports will identify the names of all the charge accounts that have opened under your name. You need to contact the fraud departments of every one of these companies and explain that this is identity theft.

It's usually best to also notify them in writing via Registered Mail with Return Receipt.

If you notice that all the fraudulent charges were made in your city...you have to entertain the thought that this might not be identity theft but rather a relative/friend who has done this....Rule out this possibility before filing a report with the police.

You need to file a police report to document the theft.

You'll also need to call the fraudulent accounts and tell them it wasn't you who opened them. Write down everything you do, who you talk to, dates... everything. Keep good notes.

It's not unusual to first find out about identity theft by seeing unknown account on your credit report. Placing the fraud alert was a good thing to do.

Stay on top of this until you get all the accounts closed and resolved. Good luck - this isn't one of life's most pleasant things to go through.
