My mom just yelled at me for listening to a band called Godsmack.
She says it's blasphemy to have a name like that.
This is her first religious outburst in a while and it caught me off-guard so I didn't have time to explain how they got that name.

One band member had a cold-sore and another one was teasing him for it. The next day, the guy who was teasing him about hit, had one. Sully (the lead singer) said that God had smacked him. Therefore, Godsmack.

It doesn't sound blasphemous to me, but what do you think?

They rock by the way.

I like the band. They play great music. And yes, Sully is a Wiccan. So am I. Wicca is not evil or anti-Christian. It's just a different faith. No we don't worship the devil. Educate yourself before you let the stereotype creep in :)
I'm guessing your Mom does not know why they call themselves "Godsmack" and she probably won't care because she doesn't like the music anyway. Their music is not blasphemous but I doubt you will ever convince her of that. Most people call ALL rock and roll the "devil's" music.. which is very childish and..well..stupid.. they are missing out on some great music!

Unfortunately both. I used to listen to them all the time. In fact I even saw them open for Metallica a few years back. They are are very talented, but hate to say that the band itself is blasphemy. Did you know that Sully is a professed witch? He is a Wiccan. Seriously, I'm not making this stuff up. I'm assuming that your mom comes from a Chrisian background so I would say either ditch Christianity or ditch Godsmack because the two don't mix very well.

Funny, godsmack is another name for heroin which Layne Staley, the lead singer for Alice in Chains often did. It was also a title of an AiC song and Godsmack were an Alice in Chains coverband.

That's an interesting story and I don't think its blasphemy, being all one word it requires a capital G. I bet a lot of people feel like your mom though, it may cause contradictions making them even more popular, never heard of them by the way.
