its not just that they wont stop begging if you give food at the table, its that they will carry those bad behaviors into other things too, like try to dominate you and be aggressive to you and other people. Only give food away from the table. greasy and spicey foods should not be given. Ok foods are things like raw veggies (carrots, pumpkin, sugar snap peas) and fruit once a week (apples, bananas..no citris). garlic, onions, apple cores/seeds, green potatoes are harmful.
lol i wonder why i got 3 thumbs down...i know some ppl are against feeding any people food, but the right people food is healthier than most dog treats in the store with all their artificial junk...

Grapes/raisins
Chocolate
Alcohol
Caffeine
Avocado pits
Yeast dough (raw; any cooked bread is ok)
Green potatoes and potato peels
Tomato tops (leaves and stems)
Corn (not toxic, just indigestible)
Raw onion and garlic (cooked is generally safe in small amounts)
Cooked bones of any kind (raw is safe)
Citrus oil
Mushrooms
Milk or ice cream
Sugary or salty junk food
Candy and gum containing artificial sweetners (pure sugar is not toxic to dogs, sugar substitutes like xylitol can be very toxic. Keep candy and gum securely locked away.)
Keep in mind an accidental bite of most foods won't kill them, it's just inadviseable to give large or frequent amounts. Chocolate especially is an overstated threat; a dog must eat about 1oz of dark chocolate per pound of body weight to cause a toxic reaction. Finding a few M&Ms on the floor is harmless.
As for the "no people food" debate, of all the dogs I know and own (the ones I know extend to more than 30) only ONE is not given people food, and he is the least healthy dog of all. One crumb of people food on the floor can give him diarrhea for a week, he has skin and coat problems, constant gas, etc. All the dogs that DO eat people food are healthy, happy, the proper weight, clean teeth, etc. I do not believe for one second that dogs should not get "people" food- read the ingredients on the dog food bag for crying out loud! If a food is made with chicken, salmon, rice, and vegetables, why on earth would the raw, whole forms of those foods be "bad" for a dog? I don't think a dog should live off potato chips, but neither should humans. Regular "people" foods are perfectly safe and healthy for pets.

You live quite fine on people food and so will your animals. Just don't give hem massive amounts of high fat and high salt items. They need fruits and veggies just like we do. Don't just feed them the scraps and left overs.
There are of course items that do not agree with them and will give them gas.... and don't give them spicy things. Common sense goes a long way.
No holly berries, onions, grapes, dark chocolate. Most of our milk chocolates have very little actually chocolate in them and small amounts are not toxic. Some flowers are a problems so don't feed them flowers....easy.
We make our own dog food, because I like to know what is in it and I don't trust the junk that comes from commercial plants.
My dogs are healthy and happy. And during the last scare, my friends stopped making fun on me for doing it.; while they were scrambling to find something safe to feed their animals and paying vet bills.

Following is a list of foods you should NEVER feed your furkids in any amount (even a tiny bit):
Avocadoes
Baby food (unless it's all natural and does not contain any onion powder)
Chocolate
Coffee, coffee grounds, and other caffeine
Cooked bones (most raw bones are safe, but when they're cooked, they dry out and can splinter)
Garlic
Grapes
Macadamia nuts
Onions
Pits and seeds from fruit (the fruit itself is safe)
Raisins
Foods that are unhealthy in large amounts or over time:
Fatty foods (like french fries, pizza, etc.)
Sugar (that piece of cake or pie isn't good for your and it isn't good for him either!)
Salt
Things you CAN feed:
Meat (raw or cooked)
Vegetables (you should cook them or smash them up in a food processor)
Plain grains and pastas
Yogurt in small quantities (a spoonful here and there)
Fish
I feed table scraps all the time, but only when the food is healthy. For example, if I'm cooking pasta, my guys get a little plain, cooked pasta before any sauces or cheese are added. A little plain rice or couscous, or other grains is fine - but I don't put salt in any of my meals. Leftover meats and vegetables make good treats.

Its never good to feed any people food to dogs unless its a vet specific food.
We have many addatives that can be harmful to dogs.
Did you know that raisins (dried grapes) are also harmful? You'd be surprised at how many people know grapes are bad but think raisins are ok. That's silly. A raisin IS a grape.
Onions are bad as well.
Corn can cause a deadly disease called bloat.
it is not digestable and can cause at the least gastric distress.
you don't want to know how many dogs I've had to help put down at the ER because people thought it was cute to watch Spot eat a corn on the cob, or a plate full of corn.
That's why I say avoid commercial foods like beneful, who uses corn addatives.
My dog has a sensative stomach so I feed him Blue Buffalo puppy kibble, brown (well cooked) rice and cooked white meat chicken breasts (boneless), cut into fine peices and some sweet potato mixed with cottage cheese.
I also feed him grilled, as greese free as possible, hamburger meat.
Carrots are a good healthy treat, but a treat only.
Again, this is because of his sensative stomach, and its all VET okay'd. Never feed your dog foods outside of his normal food without consulting a vet.
There are also vet recommended home made foods for dogs that people make due to the recall scare.
So, if your dog is on a high quality pet food (blue buffalo, canidae, wellness - none of which use corn or wheat gluten nor were they on the recall list),
and has no issues with digestion...
try NOT to table scrap him.
A LITTLE bit of spoiling can cause a LOT of problems down the line.
Illness, obesity, digestive, so on.
there are plenty of healthy treats you can give your pet, or try to avoid eating when they are aorund. (if they are kenneled or playpenned, put them in until you finish eating, for your and their own good.)
Try giving them a frozen carrot slice if they beg... frozen carrot slices or chips are good for their teeth, and healthy if done in moderation.
I know spoiling is so easy to do, but so is causing health issues down the road... so keep yourself in check for your pet's sake. ^_^

Resist anyway. My mother caused our dog to have health problems that almost killed her because she developed pancreatis. Food we eat isn't good for us most of the time and is really bad for your dog because for one thing the amounts of any salt and sugar and additives is too much for the dog because of it's weight and unability to digest it. A dog really should never have anything with salt or sugar in it. You can give your dog healthy vegetables, and we give our a small piece of banana or apple for a fresh treat, and ours will eat those, without any added salt or butter. No bread, dairy products because dogs cannot digest them. Lean meats in the smallest of quantities, and a good balanced diet dog food and doggie treats for your pet to keep it healthy, and it will not develop weight problems.

My vet told me I could feed my dog backed chicken and cooked white rice as a special meal if he is feeling low
I know it is hard to sit down and eat in front of your dog so what we do is at meal or snack time we take their treats and break them into small pieces and feed it to them (they think they are eating what we are and stay very happy) and its better for them

The best people food to give dogs is raw meat and bones. Dogs love and thrive off of the raw diet. It is 80% meat with bone, 10% meat and 10% organs.
